I remember when I lost my voice for 18 months back in 1980. I will never forget resigning my position at St. Philip’s Dunbar, going on sick leave, driving to the Employment Insurance office only to find out that our diocese did not have any long-term disability insurance.
The condition is called ‘spasmodic dysphonia’ . It was caused by a rare viral throat infection which happens statistically to one in five million people, something like winning the lottery in reverse. Spasmodic Dysphonia causes the vocal chords to overadduct (overshut) on a spasmodic or intermittent basis, cutting off words or parts of sentences. Spasmodic Dysphonia is not caused by stress, but sometimes is more noticeable under stress.
During those eighteen months, I read sixty books on public speaking and writing. It taught me so much about clarity and focus, giving me a passion to communicate, making the most of what I had.
On May 25th 1982, I had surgery at VGH by Dr. Murray Morrison in a successful operation that allowed me to speak again and go back preaching after being off for a year. My GP thought that I would never preach again, and he would have been correct, except for having had this surgery. They cut the left laryngeal nerve of the left vocal chord, which stopped the adducting/shutting of that chord. As the right chord still overadducted/overshut, it balanced out. After my surgery, my voice was free of the spasms, but was initially much quieter and more breathy.
From 1982 to 1987, I served as the assistant priest at St. Matthew’s Abbotsford. As Abbotsford was a bible belt, they had a spiritual column in the local newspaper which I began to write in. Around 80,000 people read my columns, giving me significant feedback, mostly positive. People have said to me for years that I should write books. They also encouraged me to get my doctorate.
In 1987, I became the Rector of St. Simon’s North Vancouver. The local Deep Cove Crier newspaper asked me in 1988 if I would start up a spiritual column. Little did I know that I would still be writing for this monthly newspaper twenty-six years later. I was also privileged to co-ordinate a weekly ‘Spiritually Speaking’ column for the North Shore News from the years 2,000 to 2010. With well over 360 articles published, God helped me develop my passion for writing. People kept encouraging me to write another book. In 2006, Battle for the Soul of Canada was written, receiving an award from The Word Guild. I was privileged to be interviewed about my book and the Anglican situation on most major Canadian TV, radio and newspaper stations.
I worked for a number of years writing the sequel book on Titus ‘Restoring Health: Body, Mind and Spirit’. During that time, I finished my Doctor of Divinity on the area of Strengthening Marriage: Bridging Emotional Cutoff. With what I have learned about writing from the Write! Canada conferences and The Word Guild, it enabled me to finish my part-time doctorate in just four years. A huge part of finishing a doctorate is writing numerous essays, including a final 300-page Doctoral Thesis.
With the growth of social media and the internet, over 755,000 people have read my five hundred articles online. Writing and communication is continually to be radically impacted by the hi-tech revolution. Nothing is remaining static.
Through extensive coaching with Dr. Terry Walling, I have mapped my potential next six books, using the umbrella concept “Strengthening a new generation of healthy leaders’. Losing my voice helped me find my writing voice. Everything that is against us can be turned by Jesus to our advantage. While God did not give me spasmodic dysphonia, I am grateful that God has brought much good from this trauma over the years.

A brutal attack puts Sandy on the brink of losing everything she’s loved. Her faith in God and the family she cherishes are pushed to the ultimate limit.

“You have never read a Bible commentary like this. Paul’s Letter to Titus could well be subtitled ‘Pirates of the Mediterranean’.
Dr Hird’s highly readable style lights up Paul’s counsel to his young friend whom he charges with discipling and training Piracy Island in the revolutionary courage of the truth of Jesus.
This pastoral epistle sparkles with contemporary insight.”

William Wilberforce said: “God almighty has set before me two great objects: the suppression of the Slave Trade and the reformation of manners.”
Abraham Lincoln once said that every school child should know about William Wilberforce. Ed Hird describes how the famed 19th century British parliamentarian developed – and retained – his uncompromising stand against slavery. He also spoke to Preston Manning, former Opposition Leader in Canada’s Parliament, who presented Lessons Learned from William Wilberforce’s Campaign to Abolish Slavery at a breakfast meeting in Abbotsford on February 1.
For 20 long years, from 1787 to 1807, William Wilberforce campaigned relentlessly for the abolition of the slave trade. It was incredibly painful and often deeply discouraging. What kept him from giving up as he faced defeat after defeat?
He had previously lived a self-indulgent life as a very wealthy upper class Englishman. What motivated him to stop wasting his life in drinking, gambling and endless parties?
He was a popular Member of Parliament who wowed crowds with his remarkable singing and wit. Prime Minister William Pitt said that Wilberforce had the greatest natural eloquence of all the men he had ever known. What caused Wilberforce to choose the unpopular path of putting principle above politics, and conscience over ambition?
Youthful influences
With the death of his father at just age 40, William’s comfortable world was radically shaken. At eight years of age, after his mother suffered serious illness, he was shipped off to his Uncle William and Aunt Hannah in Wimbledon.
There he became exposed to a deep faith, even being mentored by Rev. John Newton, the former slave ship captain and author of the song Amazing Grace. Some trace Wilberforce’s hatred of slavery back to this early encounter.
When Wilberforce’s wealthy grandfather got wind of his new spirituality, he threatened to disinherit him. His mother promptly rescued him and did her best to cure him through endless parties and upper class distractions.
For a while, the cure was effective. After his grandfather’s death, Wilberforce inherited the family fortune which funded his election as a very young MP. His good friend William Pitt Jr., only 24, became the youngest prime minister in English history.
Faith recovered
While spending the winter at the fashionable French and Italian Rivieras, he was suddenly called back to London to support Pitt’s Parliamentary Reform Bill. While crossing the Swiss Alps, Wilberforce read The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul by Philip Doddridge.
Both Doddridge and John Wesley were instrumental in reintroducing the forgotten teachings of Richard Baxter about self-examination, solitude, devotions and diligence. After discussing Doddridge’s book with his former tutor, Isaac Milner, Wilberforce’s life was never the same. He rediscovered his childhood faith at an adult level.
Wilberforce began reading the Bible in the original Greek. He wanted to find out for himself what the Christian faith was actually about. He discovered that it was not a system of gloomy prohibitions; true faith is about peace and hope and joy.
The Amazing Grace movie which Preston Manning often shows to young leaders vividly portrays that when Wilberforce fell in love with Jesus, he also fell in love with God’s creation. As an 18th century flower child, he saw flowers as the smiles of God’s goodness.
Putting faith into action
Rather than dropping out of politics as he was tempted to do, Wilberforce turned his new-found faith into practical action. Prime Minister Pitt wrote him, saying: “Surely the principles as well as the practice of Christianity are simple, and lead not to meditation only but to action.” We are called by Jesus to be salt and light in the public arena.
Reconnecting with his old mentor John Newton, Wilberforce realized that God could use him to end the slave trade: “God almighty has set before me two great objects: the suppression of the Slave Trade and the reformation of manners.”
Eighteenth-century England was rife with alcohol abuse, child prostitution, child labour and animal exploitation. There were more than 14,000 slaves in England alone, with hundreds of thousands more in the rich Caribbean colonies.
The future King of England, George IV, was famous for his immorality and gambling debts, keeping lockets of hair from all 7,000 women he had seduced. He and his brothers dismissed abolitionists like Wilberforce as fanatics and hypocrites.
Preston Manning has for years encouraged Christians who want to make a difference in society to follow the example of William Wilberforce.
Manning on Wilberforce
Preston Manning, now president and CEO for the Manning Centre for Building Democracy, told me that Wilberforce, in abolishing slavery, conducted a classic campaign integrating moral, economic and political issues.
As a committed Christian, Wilberforce followed Jesus’ teaching to be ‘wise as serpents and harmless as doves.’ He was careful how he introduced the taboo subject of abolition. Rather than politically discrediting others, said Manning, Wilberforce wisely erred on the side of graciousness.
Entrenched opposition
Because England was the foremost slave-trading nation on earth, it was initially unthinkable to even discuss giving up the practice. Many saw such moral reform as commercial suicide. One merchant said the African slave trade was “the foundation of our commerce . . . the life of our navigation and first cause of our national industry and riches.”
Eighty per cent of overseas British income came from the Caribbean slave plantations. In Bristol, after the initial defeat of Wilberforce’s anti-slavery bill, bells were rung, a bonfire was lit and a half-day holiday was awarded to sailors and workers. The passion for slave-produced sugar had killed their conscience. Trinidadian Prime Minister Eric Williams said it was strange that an article like sugar, so sweet and necessary to human existence, should have occasioned such crimes and bloodshed!
While fighting the slave trade, Wilberforce also invested in improving the life of England’s poor, giving one-quarter of his income, representing the equivalent of $300,000, away each year. He started cancer hospitals, eye clinics and many faith-based schools for the poor.
One civic leader begged them to not bring “any religion into the country, it was the worst thing in the world for the poor, for it made them lazy and useless.” Wilberforce knew that without prayer, all his work would be in vain: “Of all things, guard against neglecting God in the secret place of prayer.”
Change takes time
While the slave trade was abolished in 1807, slaves were not liberated until just before Wilberforce’s death. Some 800,000 Afro-Caribbeans were set free on July 31, 1834.
Some abandoned slavery because of changes in the industrial free market. Wilberforce, however, opposed slavery for godly, humanitarian reasons. While moving a motion for abolition, Wilberforce said, “Africa! Africa! Your sufferings have been the theme that has arrested and engages my heart – your sufferings no tongue can express, no language impart.”
Sadly there are still today 27 million people trapped in slavery and human trafficking. May Wilberforce’s godly example cause us to choose to make a lasting global difference.

What a joy and pleasure it is to read the completed commentary of Titus by the Rev. Dr. Ed Hird. I am so thankful to God that He did not allow Ed to give up on the writing of this commentary. Otherwise, we would have been deprived of this precious jewel which so richly, vividly and passionately reveals the inner heart of God. God raised up Christian leaders in every generation to confront the pirate character buried in every human heart. God’s ultimate business is to transform “the deceitful, violent, additive buccaneers” in the pirate land into “trustworthy, peaceful and sober” members of a Christ-like community.
Titus was not a Jew, but Paul led him to Christ and identified him as “my true son in our common faith”. Titus’ new faith in Jesus Christ transformed him radically. Paul, recognizing the grace and peace of God in Titus, made a bold, courageous, visionary and strategic choice by sending young Titus to Crete as a missionary. It is in this context that God spoke to the pirates in Crete. However, His message is relevant to all of us in every land and in every generation.
“Pirates are waiting for us around every North American corner”. Ed speaks about his personal experience with the painful effects of piracy in the Anglican Church of Canada. He sees the churches in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the world being stolen in the same way that Somalia pirates had “taken over a Saudi supertanker carrying over 100 million dollars of crude oil”. Modern-day piracy has effectively planted itself into the system of our churches. The pirating nature drains God’s resources endowed to the churches for purpose of mission. It carries out its desire to deceive, rob, and side-track us from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It sows false gospels into our lives. Ultimately, it destroys the church.
Ed’s passion is now very much focused on the call to minister to the lives within the Canadian Anglican Church in North America. Indeed, “if the wisdom in the 45-sentence book of Titus can revolutionize a pirate island, it can even transform a pirate continent like North America”.
I am so grateful to God for the miracle of the completion of this book. My reading of this small commentary with a huge gospel truth has deeply impacted me and encouraged me to continue my journey to serve the Lord and to preach the Gospel. I highly recommend Dr. Ed Hird’s book with a huge Gospel heart for the use of molding the leadership character of a new generation of healthy young leaders.

Ed Hird is a prophetic, courageous voice calling the church to be faithful to the whole gospel of Jesus Christ. Restoring Health draws its inspiration from Paul’s letter to Titus and calls pastors and Christian leaders to become whole people – in mind, body, and spirit – who embody the whole gospel. Hird offers a powerful prescription for transforming of our lives and ministries into Spirit-filled witnesses to the Christ’s power to restore not only our spirits, but our minds and bodies as well.

In “Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit”, the Reverend Dr. Ed Hird offers readers a richly engaging devotional commentary on St. Paul’s letter to Titus as the latter brought the Gospel of Christ to the island of Crete.
Ed and his wife Janice visited Crete in preparation for this study and walked in the footsteps of Titus, honored as the founding father of Christianity in Crete. His mission to convert the Cretans was no easy task, as their principal occupation was piracy, in which they reveled.
Each of Ed’s chapters, in following the text of Paul’s letter, skilfully interleaves well-informed exegesis with travelogue, history, personal and family autobiography, while also drawing on theological reflections from wise commentators — both ancient and modern, from Eusebius to Johnny Cash. Principal themes in Ed’s study include teaching on how this Epistle can build up the spiritual, mental and physical health of Christians and church leaders, the importance of sound doctrine, and the vital operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit — as necessary for today’s Christians as for the Apostolic church.
In short, this clearly-written and very readable book offers valuable teaching on how the Gospel of Christ transformed the ancient Cretans and can do the same in our lives today. It also would serve as a superb resource for home and group Bible studies.

Rev. Dr. Ed Hird, pastor and author, student of the Bible and human nature, has an ability to communicate and connect clearly through his writing. In his latest book Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit, he relates Paul’s letter to Titus to a comprehensive understanding of Cretian history and culture. He shares stories from his own and famous lives, and applies the lessons to a variety of real life practical and spiritual issues.
I love the way he explores the pirate culture, fact and fiction, and shows the”pirate” in all of us. Healthy living, in body, mind and spirit is a popular resolution today. The author shows God’s way as to how this can be accomplished, not only in our personal lives, but in society as well.

Christmas Party food is always tasty, too tasty. Millions sign up for the local gym to try to lose the post-Christmas bulge. So many well-intended recruits are gone by January 31st. My wife Janice really cares for me. She shows her love by encouraging me to not give up going to the gym year round, eating healthy food, and taking vitamins. Thank God for health-conscious wives. Restoring health requires that I practice what I preach. As a Spanish proverb puts it, a man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools.
Going to the gym two to three times a week for the past fourteen years is part of my ‘walking the walk’ in personal fitness. I feel healthier and younger now than a decade ago, having lost weight in the process. The Good Book tells us that even the youth grow weary, but they that wait on the Lord shall renew and restore their strength, rising up with wings like eagles, running and not being weary, walking and not fainting.
Part of what changed my behaviour was being rear-ended by a taxi. Dr. Paul Wiggins, while treating my aching back, said to me: “You need a personal trainer”. The next thing I knew, I was meeting with a personal trainer for six sessions, paid for by our auto insurance company.
Benjamin Franklin once said: “Health is man’s best wealth.” People often spend their health to obtain wealth, only to spend their wealth to obtain health. As Boomers are aging, we are sometimes understandably concerned that we may be going backwards in health rather than moving forward. Many seem to have fatalistically lost hope. But must aging always be a downward spiral? God promises to renew our youth like an eagle. What I am hearing from the Lord is “Don’t give up on yourself. Don’t give up on your dreams of finishing well. Why not choose to be fit? Why not choose to be healthier?”
Physical fitness is good, but by itself only goes so far. The well-known Washington DC author Mark Batterson twittered: “In my experience, physical disciplines like exercise and spiritual disciplines like prayer feed off each other.” Health is elusive. We are our own worst enemies. We want to be healthy. Yet we make choices such as too much food, too little exercise, and self-medication that cripple us and send us in the wrong direction. As a local Recreation Centre poster put it, “The hardest thing about exercise is to start doing it.”
Edward Stanley said it well: “Those who think they will not have time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.” That is why Jesus asked: “Do you want to be well?” Why do we resist getting well? Why do we so often go backwards and not forwards? Why are we so often tempted to just let nature take its course? So many people die before their time. They may keep going physically, but their dreams and hopes have died. As Mark Twain put it, most men die at age 27. We just bury them at 72. My passion is to help a new generation of healthy leaders to discover and rediscover Jesus as the Great Physician who renews our youth like an eagle.
Healthy hearts and healthy minds lead to healthy lives, healthy choices and healthy families. John said, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all things may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” (3 John 2) Health comes through the power of the Holy Spirit. As Dr. E. Stanley Jones put it:
The Spirit of God is health… A health tendency takes possession of us. We think health. We breathe health; we are health & we give health.
I will never forget the night that Lee Grady, former Editor of Charisma Magazine, prophesied about our former congregation St. Simon’s NV being a well-spring of healing with healing teams being raised up for body, soul and spirit restoration. Every worship service at St. Simon’s NV, whether traditional or contemporary, has a team ready to pray for healing. There is no contradiction between prayer, medicine and keeping fit. All can work together for our health. My prayer for those reading this article is that we will all be passionate about health and healing at all stages of our lives.

“I’m afraid there’s been an accident…”
Sandy Brown and her family have just moved to Spokane, Washington where her husband, Scott, is pastoring a new church. With a fresh start, Sandy is determined to devote more time to her four children. But, within weeks of settling in their new life, the Brown family is plunged into turmoil.
Sandy receives shocking news that her children aren’t safe, which brings back haunting memories of the trauma she experienced as a girl. Then, the unthinkable happens…
A brutal attack puts Sandy on the brink of losing everything she’s loved. Her faith in God and the family she cherishes are pushed to the ultimate limit.
Is healing possible when so many loved ones are hurt? Are miracles really possible through the power of prayer? Can life return to the way it was before?
Blue Sky reveals how a mother’s most basic instinct isn’t for survival… but for family.

“Ed Hird has written a most engaging commentary on Titus, an easy read with informative insights into the lives of pirate Cretans and how we can learn from them today.
If the good news of Jesus can impact that rebellious island, then Hird assures us that there is relevance and encouragement for our day. Pages are filled with interesting anecdotes and Hird’s wide-ranging general knowledge makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read with many opportunities to pause and reflect along the way.”
