Returning to Ruhanga
Our first Rwandan marriage seminar was in Ruhanga (West of the Kigali capital) led by Archbishop Emmanuel & Freida #Kolini. The turnout by enthusiastic couples was most encouraging. Those teaching on marriage, men, and family included Rev Christopher Caudle of New Covenant Church in Florida, the Kolinis, Janice P Hird, and myself. The Hirds taught on marriage (based on our new book For Better, For Worse).
Rev Dr Canon Tim Smith of Christ Church in Mobile Alabama had given a Menās Workshop there the day before. Tim+ leads the āMen in the Mirrorā ministry, which strengthens men in their call to be godly loving husbands and fathers.
We had previously in May 2018 taught a marriage seminar in Ruhanga, organized by the Archdeacon, Canon Mugenzi Marcel. As the previous Anglican church building had been closed a month ago pending required upgrades, we met alternatively in a neighbouring Mugera Anglican Church building that we were driven to along a hilly bumpy road. Janice and I taught yesterday from Ephesians 4:17-19 on āTransforming our Hardened Hearts in Marriageā. Spouses can easily get hearts of stone through unforgiveness to their spousesā insensitivity to their marital needs. We taught how radical forgiveness of our often clueless spouses can revolutionize a marriage, making our marriage into a powerful witness of Christās transforming love to our neighbours. Janice is such an engaging story-teller, similar to her 95-year old pastor father, Rev David Cline. Janice shared about forgiving her parents, particularly for their not being there through workaholism in their busy church work. In many cultures, women feel rejected and unloved because of their gender. Generational forgiveness of oneās parents helps remove the bitterness and resentment (hard heart) that often cripples current marriage relationships. I have a generational propensity towards unforgiveness, hard hearts, bitterness, and resulting emotional cutoff from family of origin and spouse. I have not always handled conflict well, sometimes being a conflict avoider, sometimes too defensive, sometimes not gentle enough. Perhaps you and your family have similar challenges.
Do you need to forgive your parents for favouring your brother? Are you willing to forgive your spouse for the many ways that he/she has disappointed you, often unintentionally. As Rev Chris Caudle reminded us, you can only forgive in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Rising Faith: Just As I Am
By Rev. Dr. Ed Hird
My grandmother and mother knew that I would become an Anglican priest. I dismissed this expectation, being convinced that I would become an electrical engineer like my father. In my family system, there were no adult males that attended church. In 1965, my late mother had a spiritual encounter at a Billy Graham event at the Pacific National Exhibition. Fifty-two years later, my motherās family faithfulness has had a huge impact on my life. I am a more loving, forgiving person today, because of my motherās faithful example and prayers.
Similarly, the late Billy Grahamās family faithfulness has had a huge impact on countless people. President Eisenhower memorably said: āBilly Graham is one of the best ambassadors our country has but he told me, āI am an ambassador of heaven.’ā How had Billy Graham continued for the past sixty years of Gallup polling as one of the ten most admired people in the world? My hunch is that it has to do with humility and not taking himself too seriously. Henry Kissinger commented: āTo my surprise, I found myself not only impressed but deeply moved by how he touched some profound spiritual yearningā¦I have an immense regard for Billy Graham. He is a strong but humble man, with a generous and compassionate heart that is open to every human being of every religious faith and to those who profess to have none.ā[1] It is not easy to finish well as a high-profile public figure. Everything that they say and do is constantly scrutinized. They and their families are living in a public goldfish bowl.
Family faithfulness does not mean that a person never makes mistakes. Faithfulness means being willing to humbly admit oneās mistakes and being willing to grow and change. During a Newsweek interview in 2006, Graham commented: āMuch of my life has been a pilgrimageāconstantly learning, changing, growing and maturing.ā Part of the way that Billy Graham coped with unceasing public attention has been through his self-effacing humour. In his autobiography Just as I am, Billy was always transparently telling hilarious stories about his foibles and mistakes. He is famous for having personal access to every American president since Harry Truman in 1950. The opening sentence of Billyās autobiography is āIt was July 14th 1950, and I was about to make a fool of myself.ā[2] Unschooled in presidential protocol, the 31-year old Billy Graham innocently told the reporters the content of his conversation with the President. Truman was so offended that he dismissed Billy Graham as a counterfeit.[3] Later Billy Graham visited President Truman, apologizing profusely for his ignorance and naivete. āDonāt worry about itā, replied Truman, āI realize that you hadnāt been properly briefed.ā[4] Billy Graham vowed that such a mistake would never happen again if he was ever given access to a person of rank or influence.
I have been privileged to serve on the Executive of the Greater Vancouver Festival of Hope. During this time, I have met both the Billy Graham family and the Billy Graham team. Are they perfect? No. Do they make mistakes? Yes. I do sense a family faithfulness, a willingness to humbly admit where they need to grow and learn. My thankful prayer regarding the March 3rd to 5th Greater Vancouver Festival of Hope is in thanksgiving for the tens of thousands who came to hear the Good News and the thousands who experienced rising faith for themselves.

Like Father, Like Son?
By Rev. Dr. Ed Hird
One of my favorite times of year is Fatherās Day. I am so grateful that my father was here on earth for so long. When a person deeply admires their father, it is easy to feel that one can never fill their shoes. When I lost my voice for eighteen months in December 1980, I remember feeling that I must be disappointing my father. What I have discovered over the years is that my father has been one of my greatest supporters, and has never stopped cheering for me.
Recently I read the book Rebel with A Cause, which described the fascinating relationship between the late Billy Graham and his son Franklin. Ā Growing up is rarely easy, especially for those with highly successful, famous parents.Ā During his time of rebellion, Franklin learned that he could truly be himself rather than have to be another Billy Graham.Ā Franklin commented: āAlmost every child who has a famous parent struggles with finding his own way and wondering if he is being viewed as an individual, not just an extension of his father or mother.āĀ Finding out whom we really are takes time, self-reflection, and willingness to grow.
Franklinās deep love for his now ninety-seven year old father shines through every page of this book. You can also see how the family sacrificed because Billy Graham, being in such demand, was away for long stretches of time.Ā Successful parents are often forced to travel a lot, often at great cost to their families.Ā Franklinās mom Ruth was a rock of stability and caring in the midst of the whirlwind of Billy Grahamās global travels.
A major part of Franklin working through his rebellious phase was through his participation in the early days of Samaritanās Purse, a relief agency perhaps best known nowadays for Operation Christmas Child. Franklin commented: āā¦I didnāt like seeing people getting hurt when they couldnāt do much to help themselves.ā The Graham family has a deep spirit of adventure which causes them to sometimes hang over the edge. Out of compassion for workers at a Jordanian medical clinic, Franklin and a companion drove a much needed land rover from England to Jordan, travelling thousands of often precarious miles through nine countries, including Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. When international or North American tragedy strikes, Franklin through Samaritanās Purse is often one of the first to be there helping. The book tells gripping stories of risking life and limb as lives are helped in the tumultuous Middle East and in war-torn countries like Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. Through Samaritanās Purse, many doctors and nurses like Dr. Kent Brantley have served in places like Liberia during the Ebola epidemic, even sometimes contracting and surviving the virus themselves. Samaritanās Purse reminds us that the love of God and love of neighbour go together. Jesus not only shared good news with people. He also practically fed the poor and healed the sick. May we too on this Fatherās Day be people who love both God and neighbour.

David Bentall on Leaving a Legacy
By Rev. Dr. Ed Hird
Every week I meet with people for coaching sessions in local coffeeshops.Ā Since doing a Deep Cove Crier article on David
Bentallās earlier bestselling book The Company You Keep, I met weekly with two other people to do a book study on Davidās books.Ā His newest book Leaving a Legacy has taught me a lot about the possibilities and pitfalls of family businesses.Ā David is from the third generation of a Greater Vancouver family whose members are well-known real estate developers.[1]Ā For twenty years, David worked in the family business, including seven years as president and CEO of Dominion Construction, during which time they built the $100 million Rogers Arena.[2]
In reading Davidās new book, I learned that family businesses on average last twenty-four years, twice as long as other companies.[3]Ā The oldest family business Kongo Gumi Company has been in existence for 1414 years so far.[4]Ā The average CEO only last five years, in contrast to family business leadership that can last for decades.[5]Ā I had no idea that approximately 85% of all companies worldwide are family businesses.[6]Ā As the āeconomic engine of the global economyā, family businesses provide 50% of North American wages.[7]
Davidās book helps family businesses to integrate family and business, so that oneās business does not destroy oneās family.[8]Ā Wise families always put family first and business second.Ā David comments: āIn business, success is measured by profits earned; whereas in a family, the yardstick is love.ā[9]Ā Money given unwisely to oneās children ends up being a curse: āThey donāt need more money or more stuff.Ā They need more of their parentsā time and more of their love.ā[10]Ā One of the challenges of family businesses is that the new generation has often not been mentored regarding what it really means to work.[11]Ā David encourages family business members to initially work outside of the family firm in order to gain perspective.[12]Ā Growing up in the shadow of highly successful parents can cause the new generation to suffer from an acute sense of inadequacy.Ā David comments: āTo say that my self-esteem was fragile would be an understatement.ā[13] Ā Ā Many family businesses suffer from lack of good governance policies and structures.[14]Ā Less than 1% of family businesses, says David, have effective boards.[15]Ā The Bentall family paid a high price because of this omission, resulting in a āfractured wasteland of broken relationshipsā.[16]Ā David has dedicated his life as a consultant and executive life coach helping other family businesses avoid these same costly mistakes.[17]Ā His transparencies about his own leadership foibles make compelling reading.Ā He freely admits that he used to suffer from the need to always be right.[18] āNothing was too sacred for meā, said David, āI began charging about the company, tilting at windmills.ā[19]
David and I go back a long way.Ā He was there the night that I came to a personal faith in Christ at age 17. David mentored and encouraged me in my first steps of faith.Ā He has been able to integrate his faith and his business life in a way that is not often seen.Ā Genuine faith walks the walk, not just talks the talk.
One of the generational strengths of the Bentall family is integrity.[20] Granddad Charles Bentall was famous for building downtown skyscrapers on no more than a handshake.[21] Jimmy Pattison commented: āDavid C. Bentall is a man of great integrity and depth. Heās also insightful and caring.ā[22] My prayer for those reading this article is that we too will leave a lasting legacy of integrity.[23]
