Returning to Ruhanga

Our first Rwandan marriage seminar was in Ruhanga (West of the Kigali capital) led by Archbishop Emmanuel & Freida #Kolini. The turnout by enthusiastic couples was most encouraging. Those teaching on marriage, men, and family included Rev Christopher Caudle of New Covenant Church in Florida, the Kolinis, Janice P Hird, and myself. The Hirds taught on marriage (based on our new book For Better, For Worse).

Rev Dr Canon Tim Smith of Christ Church in Mobile Alabama had given a Menā€™s Workshop there the day before. Tim+ leads the ā€œMen in the Mirrorā€ ministry, which strengthens men in their call to be godly loving husbands and fathers.

We had previously in May 2018 taught a marriage seminar in Ruhanga, organized by the Archdeacon, Canon Mugenzi Marcel. As the previous Anglican church building had been closed a month ago pending required upgrades, we met alternatively in a neighbouring Mugera Anglican Church building that we were driven to along a hilly bumpy road. Janice and I taught yesterday from Ephesians 4:17-19 on ā€œTransforming our Hardened Hearts in Marriageā€. Spouses can easily get hearts of stone through unforgiveness to their spousesā€™ insensitivity to their marital needs. We taught how radical forgiveness of our often clueless spouses can revolutionize a marriage, making our marriage into a powerful witness of Christā€™s transforming love to our neighbours. Janice is such an engaging story-teller, similar to her 95-year old pastor father, Rev David Cline. Janice shared about forgiving her parents, particularly for their not being there through workaholism in their busy church work. In many cultures, women feel rejected and unloved because of their gender. Generational forgiveness of oneā€™s parents helps remove the bitterness and resentment (hard heart) that often cripples current marriage relationships. I have a generational propensity towards unforgiveness, hard hearts, bitterness, and resulting emotional cutoff from family of origin and spouse. I have not always handled conflict well, sometimes being a conflict avoider, sometimes too defensive, sometimes not gentle enough. Perhaps you and your family have similar challenges.

Do you need to forgive your parents for favouring your brother? Are you willing to forgive your spouse for the many ways that he/she has disappointed you, often unintentionally. As Rev Chris Caudle reminded us, you can only forgive in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Rising Faith: Just As I Am

 By Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

My grandmother and mother knew that I would become an Anglican priest.  I dismissed this expectation, being convinced that I would become an electrical engineer like my father.  In my family system, there were no adult males that attended church.  In 1965, my late mother had a spiritual encounter at a Billy Graham event at the Pacific National Exhibition.  Fifty-two years later, my motherā€™s family faithfulness has had a huge impact on my life.  I am a more loving, forgiving person today, because of my motherā€™s faithful example and prayers.

Similarly, the late Billy Grahamā€™s family faithfulness has had a huge impact on countless people.  President Eisenhower memorably said: ā€œBilly Graham is one of the best ambassadors our country has but he told me, ā€˜I am an ambassador of heaven.’ā€  How had Billy Graham continued for the past sixty years of Gallup polling as one of the ten most admired people in the world?  My hunch is that it has to do with humility and not taking himself too seriously. Henry Kissinger commented: ā€œTo my surprise, I found myself not only impressed but deeply moved by how he touched some profound spiritual yearningā€¦I have an immense regard for Billy Graham. He is a strong but humble man, with a generous and compassionate heart that is open to every human being of every religious faith and to those who profess to have none.ā€[1]  It is not easy to finish well as a high-profile public figure.  Everything that they say and do is constantly scrutinized.  They and their families are living in a public goldfish bowl.

Family faithfulness does not mean that a person never makes mistakes.  Faithfulness means being willing to humbly admit oneā€™s mistakes and being willing to grow and change.  During a Newsweek interview in 2006, Graham commented: ā€œMuch of my life has been a pilgrimageā€”constantly learning, changing, growing and maturing.ā€ Part of the way that Billy Graham  coped with unceasing public attention has been through his self-effacing humour.  In his autobiography Just as I am, Billy was always transparently telling hilarious stories about his foibles and mistakes.  He is famous for having personal access to every American president since Harry Truman in 1950.  The opening sentence of Billyā€™s autobiography is ā€œIt was July 14th 1950, and I was about to make a fool of myself.ā€[2]  Unschooled in presidential protocol, the 31-year old Billy Graham innocently told the reporters the content of his conversation with the President.  Truman was so offended that he dismissed Billy Graham as a counterfeit.[3]  Later Billy Graham visited President Truman, apologizing profusely for his ignorance and naivete.  ā€œDonā€™t worry about itā€, replied Truman, ā€œI realize that you hadnā€™t been properly briefed.ā€[4]  Billy Graham vowed that such a mistake would never happen again if he was ever given access to a person of rank or influence.

I have been privileged to serve on the Executive of the Greater Vancouver Festival of Hope.  During this time, I have met both the Billy Graham family and the Billy Graham team.  Are they perfect? No.  Do they make mistakes? Yes.  I do sense a family faithfulness, a willingness to humbly admit where they need to grow and learn.  My thankful prayer regarding the March 3rd to 5th Greater Vancouver Festival of Hope is in thanksgiving for the tens of thousands who came to hear the Good News and the thousands who experienced rising faith for themselves.

Like Father, Like Son?

By Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

One of my favorite times of year is Fatherā€™s Day. I am so grateful that my father was here on earth for so long. When a person deeply admires their father, it is easy to feel that one can never fill their shoes.  When I lost my voice for eighteen months in December 1980, I remember feeling that I must be disappointing my father.  What I have discovered over the years is that my father has been one of my greatest supporters, and has never stopped cheering for me.

Recently I read the book Rebel with A Cause, which described the fascinating relationship between the late Billy Graham and his son Franklin. Ā Growing up is rarely easy, especially for those with highly successful, famous parents.Ā  During his time of rebellion, Franklin learned that he could truly be himself rather than have to be another Billy Graham.Ā  Franklin commented: ā€œAlmost every child who has a famous parent struggles with finding his own way and wondering if he is being viewed as an individual, not just an extension of his father or mother.ā€Ā  Finding out whom we really are takes time, self-reflection, and willingness to grow.

Franklinā€™s deep love for his now ninety-seven year old father shines through every page of this book. You can also see how the family sacrificed because Billy Graham, being in such demand, was away for long stretches of time.Ā  Successful parents are often forced to travel a lot, often at great cost to their families.Ā  Franklinā€™s mom Ruth was a rock of stability and caring in the midst of the whirlwind of Billy Grahamā€™s global travels.

A major part of Franklin working through his rebellious phase was through his participation in the early days of Samaritanā€™s Purse, a relief agency perhaps best known nowadays for Operation Christmas Child.  Franklin commented: ā€œā€¦I didnā€™t like seeing people getting hurt when they couldnā€™t do much to help themselves.ā€  The Graham family has a deep spirit of adventure which causes them to sometimes hang over the edge.  Out of compassion for workers at a Jordanian medical clinic, Franklin and a companion drove a much needed land rover from England to Jordan, travelling thousands of often precarious miles through nine countries, including Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon.  When international or North American tragedy strikes, Franklin through Samaritanā€™s Purse is often one of the first to be there helping.  The book tells gripping stories of risking life and limb as lives are helped in the tumultuous Middle East and in war-torn countries like Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.  Through Samaritanā€™s Purse, many doctors and nurses like Dr. Kent Brantley have served in places like Liberia during the Ebola epidemic, even sometimes contracting and surviving the virus themselves. Samaritanā€™s Purse reminds us that the love of God and love of neighbour go together.  Jesus not only shared good news with people.  He also practically fed the poor and healed the sick.  May we too on this Fatherā€™s Day be people who love both God and neighbour.

The Rev. Dr. Ed Hird, BSW, MDiv, DMin

David Bentall on Leaving a Legacy

By Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

Every week I meet with people for coaching sessions in local coffeeshops.Ā  Since doing a Deep Cove Crier article on David

Bentallā€™s earlier bestselling book The Company You Keep, I met weekly with two other people to do a book study on Davidā€™s books.Ā  His newest book Leaving a Legacy has taught me a lot about the possibilities and pitfalls of family businesses.Ā  David is from the third generation of a Greater Vancouver family whose members are well-known real estate developers.[1]Ā  For twenty years, David worked in the family business, including seven years as president and CEO of Dominion Construction, during which time they built the $100 million Rogers Arena.[2]

In reading Davidā€™s new book, I learned that family businesses on average last twenty-four years, twice as long as other companies.[3]Ā  The oldest family business Kongo Gumi Company has been in existence for 1414 years so far.[4]Ā  The average CEO only last five years, in contrast to family business leadership that can last for decades.[5]Ā  I had no idea that approximately 85% of all companies worldwide are family businesses.[6]Ā  As the ā€˜economic engine of the global economyā€™, family businesses provide 50% of North American wages.[7]

Davidā€™s book helps family businesses to integrate family and business, so that oneā€™s business does not destroy oneā€™s family.[8]Ā  Wise families always put family first and business second.Ā  David comments: ā€œIn business, success is measured by profits earned; whereas in a family, the yardstick is love.ā€[9]Ā  Money given unwisely to oneā€™s children ends up being a curse: ā€œThey donā€™t need more money or more stuff.Ā  They need more of their parentsā€™ time and more of their love.ā€[10]Ā  One of the challenges of family businesses is that the new generation has often not been mentored regarding what it really means to work.[11]Ā  David encourages family business members to initially work outside of the family firm in order to gain perspective.[12]Ā  Growing up in the shadow of highly successful parents can cause the new generation to suffer from an acute sense of inadequacy.Ā  David comments: ā€œTo say that my self-esteem was fragile would be an understatement.ā€[13] Ā Ā Many family businesses suffer from lack of good governance policies and structures.[14]Ā  Less than 1% of family businesses, says David, have effective boards.[15]Ā  The Bentall family paid a high price because of this omission, resulting in a ā€˜fractured wasteland of broken relationshipsā€™.[16]Ā  David has dedicated his life as a consultant and executive life coach helping other family businesses avoid these same costly mistakes.[17]Ā  His transparencies about his own leadership foibles make compelling reading.Ā  He freely admits that he used to suffer from the need to always be right.[18] ā€œNothing was too sacred for meā€, said David, ā€œI began charging about the company, tilting at windmills.ā€[19]

David and I go back a long way.Ā  He was there the night that I came to a personal faith in Christ at age 17. David mentored and encouraged me in my first steps of faith.Ā  He has been able to integrate his faith and his business life in a way that is not often seen.Ā  Genuine faith walks the walk, not just talks the talk.

One of the generational strengths of the Bentall family is integrity.[20]  Granddad Charles Bentall was famous for building downtown skyscrapers on no more than a handshake.[21]  Jimmy Pattison commented: ā€œDavid C. Bentall is a man of great integrity and depth.  Heā€™s also insightful and caring.ā€[22]  My prayer for those reading this article is that we too will leave a lasting legacy of integrity.[23]

Celebrating the Gift of Family

By the Rev. Dr. Ed and Janice Hird137

We fell in love forty three years ago, and have never looked back.  With three adult sons and two grandchildren, we are so grateful for the gift of family.  This past summer has been a time of family reunions for many of us.   We deeply appreciated the opportunities to hang out with our family members, particularly those who live far away.

Most families are complicated and messy.  Reconnecting with our family members during the summer can be challenging for many people.  Setting boundaries with people that we love is never easy.  Saying no to our family members, even when necessary, can sometimes be really hard. Even Jesus, who was never unloving, had problems at times with his family.  He said that sometimes there would be painful division even within our families.  Jesus said that family cannot be the ultimate, but rather a penultimate very high priority.  He said that if we sought first Godā€™s kingdom, then everything would go better, including our relationships with our family.

40ae4-thegoodshepherdicon2One time Jesus was so involved with helping people that he did not have time to eat.  This so upset his family and friends that they decided that he must be out of his mind.  In some cultures, skipping a family meal is almost unforgivable.  Eating three square meals a day is on the same level for some families as following the Ten Commandments or the Golden Rule.  Because there was such a large crowd, his mother and brothers could not even reach Jesus.  You can imagine how their anxiety level would have been spiking.

In the midst of family anxiety, Jesus had a very clear idea of who he was and what he was called to do.  This gave him the courage to say no to his family, when they were trying to stop his important work.  He said the shocking phrase: ā€œWho is my mother?  And who are my brothers?ā€  If we said that with our families, they would not likely be pleased.   They might say back to us, ā€œWhat are you talking about, Ed and Janice?  We are your family.  We were there at your wedding thirty-eight years ago.ā€  Jesus went on to memorably say ā€œ My family, my mother , brothers and sisters are those who do the Fatherā€™s willā€.  Family for Jesus is bigger than just the physical 042nuclear family.  Jesus dearly loved his nuclear family, but he had to remind them that even our family cannot come first in our lives.   This is not an easy lesson to learn, because we love our families so dearly.   Our prayer for those reading this article is that we may learn to celebrate the gift of family in a way that still allows us the freedom to say no, to set healthy boundaries.

Bella: Lightning a Candle

By the Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

Many of us are unaware that BC was once a Spanish Territory.  Our famous Captain Vancouver, after which our city is named, was sent to the West Coast by the British Government to receive this land from the Spanish.  I took one year of Spanish in Grade 10 after finishing Grade 12 French in Grade 9.  Languages have always fascinated me, perhaps because I spent two years in Montreal learning French during the time of Expo 67.

Our St. Simonā€™s NV community has been on many mission trips over the years, especially to Mexico and Rwanda.  Our first St. Simonā€™s NV mission trip was to the Hispanic Anglicans in Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the world.  It was a wonderful opportunity to refresh my Spanish, preaching, teaching and even singing on the radio in Spanish.  Our Latino Honduran friends were very kind to me as I sought to improve my Spanish diction.  I think that they appreciated my making the effort to speak in their heart language.

The largest ethnic minority in North America is the Hispanic-speaking people with over 52 million in the United States, 14 million in California, and almost 5 million in Greater Los Angeles.  Fifty percent of all those recently added to the USA population were Hispanic.  Many commentators  predicted that the very close American Presidential election  would be won on November 6th by whichever way the Hispanic voters lean. (Hindsight comment: It was.)

One of the most delightful movies that crosses the Hispanic/Anglo divide is Bella.  My wife and I recently borrowed Bella from the local library, after a good friend recommended we check it out.  We were not disappointed with our ā€˜date nightā€™ movie.  This stunning ā€˜once in a lifetimeā€™ movie left us both in tears.  It left me with the conviction that Bella has the potential to do something beautiful in the world. Bella lights a candle in people’s heart.

Bella struggled for visibility until winning the prestigious Peopleā€™s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival as well as a Heartland Film Festival award.  Then our North Shore-based LionsGate Films and Roadside Attractions became the distributors.  LionsGate Films is part of the reason why with so much film activity, the North Shore is often called Hollywood North.

As the top-rated movie on the New York Times Readerā€™s Poll, the Wall Street Journal called Bella ā€˜the fallā€™s biggest surpriseā€™.  With more than $10 million in domestic box office, it became one of that yearā€™s top-ten-grossing independent films, breaking the record for a Latino-themed film in total box office earnings.

Alejandro Monteverde, Bellaā€™s Producer with Metanoia Films, wanted to produce a movie that showed the real face of Latinos.  So often Hispanic people are portrayed in movies in less than flattering ways.  We need more culturally sensitive movies like Bella.  For Latino people, the kitchen is at the heart of the family.

Everything in Bella was food-related, whether speaking of the key actors who worked in restaurants or the intimate family times where Nina a pregnant non-hispanic waitress is welcomed into their Latino hospitality. Bella reminded me that the Hispanic people have a rich family heritage and deep spirituality that is an important contribution to our North American multicultural mix.  In an age where marriages and families are often collapsing, the Latino people have much to teach us about human dignity and making room for everyone.

The gist of the story is that Jose, a famous soccer star, becomes involved in a tragic car accident that ends his career.  He lost his passion for life and for soccer.  Meeting Nina changes everything for him and for her in a most unexpected way.  More than romance, Bella reveals the beauty of sacrificial love.  I thank God for Bellaā€™s celebration of family, food, music and life-affirming Judeo-Christian values.  You could check this movie out of your local library or view it online.  My prayer for those reading this article is that we will daily rediscover the importance of family, kindness and compassion for others in need.

October Baby a Quiet Hit

By The Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

How many of you are October babies or have October baby children?  My childrenā€™s birthdates are in March, June and November, and I and my wife am born in January and August. So no October babies for us.

We were privileged to have the first BC showing of the acclaimed film October Baby.  We were pleasantly surprised by the great interest shown and wide variety of people who turned up for the first viewing.  It has been released as well in DVD and Blu-Ray edition.  You can obtain your own copy online .

October Baby is a surprise hit opening at No. 8 against THE HUNGER GAMES and other big-budget movies, although opening on half as many screens.  October Baby ranked No. 3 in per screen average sales. The film earned more than $5.3 million at the box office, appeared on page A-1 of the New York Times and was named among Entertainment Weeklyā€™s ā€œ15 Most Impressive Box Office Performances for 2012.ā€ New York Times called October Baby a ā€˜quiet hitā€™.   Film directors and brothers Jon and Andy Erwin have been amazed at the strong response to their film.

The movie begins with the heroine Hannah hesitantly taking part in her theatrical debut in college. Before her first lines, she collapses. Numerous medical tests all point to one underlying factor: Hannahā€™s difficult birth. This revelation is nothing compared to discovering that she was actually adopted  with complications for an early traumatic birth.

Hannah is frustrated and baffled that her medical doctor father never told her that she was adopted.  This cast Hannah into an identity crisis: ā€œMy parents are not my parents. I donā€™t know who I am.  They lied to me. Whom can I trust?ā€

Hannah goes on a road journey with Jason, her oldest friend.  Her dad was not pleased.  In the midst of her incredible journey to discover her hidden past and find hope for her unknown future, Hannah sees that life can be so much more than what you have planned.  I particularly appreciated the way that Rachel Hendrix played the part of Hannah.  It was engaging, believable and transformative.  My hunch is that Rachel has a great film career ahead of her.

Everytime I have watched October Baby, I found myself weeping.  It is an amazing story of healing, forgiveness and reconciliation.  Hannah was told: ā€œYou have the power to forgive, to choose to forgive. Let it go. Hatred is a burden you no longer need to carry. Only in forgiveness can you be free, Hannah…if the Son shall set you free, you will be free indeed.ā€  October Baby is really a love story with a surprising ending. If I tell you any more, I will spoil the story.

My prayer for the those reading this article is that we will all be reminded that life is beautiful.

The Gift of Family…

Uncle Don was one of my godfathers. We loved to visit him while vacationing. This is a photo from a 1993 visit to Don’s Vineyard. He was a fascinating conversationalist, with a deep love for history. Before I had my throat operation, I had a week with my uncle where we shared deeply about life in Christ and John 15. That night as we stayed up late, Uncle Don had a spiritual breakthrough with Jesus.

I thank God for our wonderful parents Ted and Lorna Hird who had recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. This was taken at Christmas 1995. I am so grateful to have loving parents that believed in me.

My late Uncle Don (& Myra) Allen started up a Vineyard on the Westbank of Kelowna, after retiring from the Navy. During the War, he was a Deep Sea Diver. I had the privilege of taking his funeral, not an easy thing to do.

It was great for Andrew and his brothers to be able to spend time with their Great-Uncle Don and Great-Aunt Myra in Westbank, BC.

Uncle Don loved to sit outside on his porch on the beautiful summer Okanagan days

Uncle Don, with my sons, loved to learn and pass on his learnings to others. He was the one who taught me about my amazing great-grandmother Mary McLean Allen who interviewed Louis Riel as a newspaper reporter while disguised as a Roman Catholic Priest.
