5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!! Reviewed in Canada on October 22, 2021 Verified Purchase I found this book to be an honest reflection on the actions of famous past Christians who did great things for the Kingdom of God. It shows very clearly how each past saint had major flaws and how God used them anyway to great and wonderful things. As a result, it is also extremely encouraging for Christians who want to do great things as it is quite clear God can use them despite their flaws.Rev. Ken Harding
5.0 out of 5 stars The Rev’d Dr. Ed Hird — a priest of whom Chaucer would approve (see Canterbury Tales- The Parson) Reviewed in Canada on October 23, 2021 Ed and Janice walked the talk long before Ed started to write about it. Their series of books offer tested insights into living with discipline in the light of Scripture amidst a world that often prefers the camouflage of shifting shadows.
This book offers brief, well researched and documented stories of 20 Christians who withstood the political and social pressures of their times to not only walk in the light and life of Scripture and their faith, but to bring hope and encouragement, sometimes even transformation to the lives of others; and unlike many books offering encouragement to readers, Ed and Janice have put their insights into a truly timeless format.
“God’s Firestarters” can easily be read individually for information, insight, and encouragement, or it can readily and profitably be used in a book club or study group for inspiration and education. The questions at the end of the book are hardly complete or exhaustive, but leaders of a book club or study group can easily springboard off them to stimulating and valuable discussion.
HOWEVER, the most beneficial use of the book, and the one that would bring the most fulfillment to readers, would be for them to find a way to bring some practical application of what they’ve read to the life of their own wider community in a manner that spreads the hope of the Gospel, or lovingly and compassionately brings the light of Scripture into the confusing shadows their world.
I warmly commend this book to all.
