Did you know that Katharina was the one who proposed marriage to Martin Luther, that Charles and John Wesley met with scandal and opposition in America, or that John Newton was a bad-tempered, rebellious alcoholic. Ed and Janice Hird reveal these historical bits and many more in their recently released book God’s Firestarters—Preparing Our Families for Coming Revivals.

In twenty fast-paced chapters the Hirds delve into the lives and impact of twenty giants of the Christian faith. These stories span centuries from Katharina Luther (1499-1582) and Susanna Wesley (1669-1742) to the 21st century and Chuck Smith (1927-2013), John Wimber (1934-1997), and J. I. Packer (1926-2020).

The accounts are tightly written with the abundant corroboration of a Wikipedia profile (there are a total of 717 endnotes). This is testimony to the rigorous research that has gone into each story. That’s a good thing too, for some of these accounts are almost unbelievable in the way God worked—through unlikely people, doing unlikely things, in unlikely places.

Though the stories are interesting and many entertaining, the Hirds’ real motivation in writing this book was not merely to relate lively histories, but to spark in readers a desire for more of the same surrender, obedience, faith, and audacity that was present in these revival firestarters. I would say it succeeds.

The book concludes with this prayer expressing the heart of the authors: “Wake us up. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit. Send the fire once again. Revive us, transform us, renew us, refresh us in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

A section of Discussion Questions precedes the Endnotes, making this a great choice for Bible study groups or book clubs.

Fire Starters is a fascinating collection of short stories about 20 Christian men and women, who dramatically helped change world religious culture. Through their lives and teaching, they caused millions of people living in spiritual darkness, to become children of light.
The very extensive end notes also increased my knowledge about these wonderfully bold Christians. I couldn’t put the book down!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Historial Masterpiece

Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2021

Rarely do I find myself so compelled by research and stories of historical giants that I can’t wait to turn the page. I thought I knew a little about Dr. Livingstone, George Whitefield, John and Charles Wesley, Dr. Stanley Jones and more, but the authors Dr. Ed and Janice Hird have made these heroes of the faith come alive. It’s filled with love and romance, along with pain and suffering, and how it can strengthen marriages. It delves into the lives of how ordinary people changed the slave trade, discovered Africa, impacted India, England and impacted the world to know our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This book is magnificent, filled with Holy Spirit inspired words that will at times make you gasp with sorrow and other times be astounded with amazement and joy. The authors engage us with stories of people whose shoulders we stand on, to give us fire in our own belly to use our ordinary lives to do extraordinary things. If they can do it, so can we. Well done Dr. Ed and Janice Hird, you’ve written your best book yet.

Tom Morrison, Engineer

“Life is difficult,” wrote M. Scott Peck in The Road Less Travelled, (Simon & Schuster, New York, 1978). Nothing could more abundantly express this fact than Ed and Janice Hird’s God’s Firestarters, whose 150 pages trace the biographies of twenty leaders who collectively formed the backbone of the Protestant faith for nearly five hundred years. These twenty heroes – they could not be described in lesser terms – overcame a more complete array of hardships and setbacks than can possibly be imagined – physical and mental illness and injury, hostility, slander, betrayal, persecution, captivity, material loss, bereavement and, not least, those enemies from within — disillusionment, temptation, self-doubt and sheer exhaustion. Challenge in good times, comfort in bad times, it is a privilege to share Ed and Janice’s God’s Firestarters.

I finished reading your book last night and it is the most enjoyable book I have ever read!!!!
Ever since becoming a Christian, my greatest thrill is hearing of Christ changing lives. A favorite saying of mine, for many years, has been, “if there were half as many sermons and twice as many testimonies, there would be four times as many Christians”. Testimonies make Christians, sermons mature believers.
The two of you have done a superb job of telling the stories of twenty real fire starters. Twenty people who God has used to take literally millions from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.
While almost all of your twenty were great preachers, I believe most of the growth came as the masses saw friends and neighbours lives being transformed. I will be promoting it.
God bless both of you and your work.

“This incredibly inspiring volume on God’s “Firestarters” powerfully reminds us that God has never stopped doing a new thing on his mission of redemption for the world. Authors Ed and Janice Hird take you behind the scenes and reveal intimate details of the lives of twenty remarkable Christ-followers who changed the world for God and for good. The vignettes of their life stories are replete with remarkable Christian devotion, courage, sacrifice and innovations in ministry which will whet your appetite to seek God for new expressions of Spirit-inspired activity in your own life.

“Do you need a dose of spiritual refreshment? Great for daily meditation and personal inspiration, God’s Firestarters will stir your soul and awaken your heart. You will read about the remarkable men and women who give us hope that revival is still possible in our modern tumultuous times.” This short paragraph from Dr. Ed and Janice Hird’s most recent book invites the reader to enter into a new experience of God. The authors’ hope is not that the reader will simply revel in what God has done through remarkable men and women who sparked revival in the past, but kindle their hearts to desire another move of God in our nation in our lifetime.
The twenty men and women featured here represent the many whom God used to spark revival movements and other ministries that far outlived their time on earth. But these chapters differ somewhat from the more familiar biographical profiles in that the authors often focus on people behind the scenes as well as the involvement of and effects on their families.
The stories highlight major challenges, disappointments, opposition, false accusations, disease, and tragic life circumstances that could have moved these stalwarts off course, but didn’t. When you read some of the stories, you’d wonder how one individual could possibly have accomplished all the things they did in several lifetimes, let alone one. The stories are amazing.
This book is a treasure trove of great stories about ordinary people whom God used in unusual ways to accomplish his purposes. It will both fascinate and challenge the reader to think deeply about what God can do with one person fully committed to him.

In this highly engaging book, Ed and Janice Hird bring to light the extraordinary range of people that God uses to ignite His renewals in the Spirit. Both the strengths and shortcomings of “God’s Firestarters” are realistically presented, without apology. In becoming a “Firestarter” many different paths to surrender are presented, and the book is both a history lesson on Church growth and development as well as a teaching on surrender to God’s will from which we can all benefit. I would strongly recommend this book to those who like me, only have a passing familiarity with Spirit led revivals in the Church.

When I was a young Christian and mother I longed for a book like this. I needed Christians to emulate. This book provides vision for how to walk out faith. It also counters my perfectionism and the guilt that occurs when I don’t get it quite right. Firestarters were used by God despite their humanity. This is good news. Maybe I can bring God’s light into a dark world too. Thank you Ed and Janice.

As we read about these incredible history makers, we are reminded that all of us can be a difference maker and start a fire for the Lord within another’s heart. I personally appreciate how they don’t gloss over their frailties and personal challenges, reminding us that God delights in using normal human beings to do great things for him.

Canon Dr. Chris Sugden of Oxford on God’s Firestarters

Canon Dr Chris Sugden of Oxford on God’s Firestarters book, available on Amazon.com

“Individualistic Western Christianity seeks out and lauds its heroes.  God’s Firestarters shows them to be ordinary men and women of clay with faults and flaws, yet God blessed many lives through them and those who served with them in the movements of the Spirit who inspired them. The details the authors have painstakingly unearthed are not well known and their footnotes to other books are a valuable door into discovering important chapters in the history of the Christian church. A question worth exploring further is how far these anti-institutional firestarters realized the need to build institutions to continue and spread the ministries and insights they were granted- Wesley (Methodist societies) and Carey (Serampore University) clearly did.”

I found this book to be an honest reflection on the actions of famous past Christians who did great things for the Kingdom of God. It shows very clearly how each past saint had major flaws and how God used them anyway to great and wonderful things. As a result, it is also extremely encouraging for Christians who want to do great things as it is quite clear God can use them despite their flaws.Rev. Ken Harding

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rev’d Dr. Ed Hird — a priest of whom Chaucer would approve (see Canterbury Tales- The Parson)
Reviewed in Canada on October 23, 2021
Ed and Janice walked the talk long before Ed started to write about it. Their series of books offer tested insights into living with discipline in the light of Scripture amidst a world that often prefers the camouflage of shifting shadows.

This book offers brief, well researched and documented stories of 20 Christians who withstood the political and social pressures of their times to not only walk in the light and life of Scripture and their faith, but to bring hope and encouragement, sometimes even transformation to the lives of others; and unlike many books offering encouragement to readers, Ed and Janice have put their insights into a truly timeless format.

“God’s Firestarters” can easily be read individually for information, insight, and encouragement, or it can readily and profitably be used in a book club or study group for inspiration and education. The questions at the end of the book are hardly complete or exhaustive, but leaders of a book club or study group can easily springboard off them to stimulating and valuable discussion.

HOWEVER, the most beneficial use of the book, and the one that would bring the most fulfillment to readers, would be for them to find a way to bring some practical application of what they’ve read to the life of their own wider community in a manner that spreads the hope of the Gospel, or lovingly and compassionately brings the light of Scripture into the confusing shadows their world.

I warmly commend this book to all.
