Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit

Dr John B. MacDonald’s review of Restoring Health

Restoring Health: Body, Mind and Spirit by Ed A. Hird.

This book is part of the author’s focus on restoring health to the North American church by strengthening a new generation of healthy leaders. Paul’s letter to Titus is the biblical text for this project.

The book begins with a foreword by the respected theologian, J. I. Packer, and no fewer than eight pages of endorsements.

Paul had some harsh words to say about the people of Crete where Titus was serving: “one of themselves, a prophet of their own said, ‘Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.’ This testimony is true” (Titus 1:12-13a; pp. 29-30). Dr. Hird expands on this assessment by drawing from Crete’s ancient history as a habitation for pirates.

Hird then makes a comparison between the cultures of ancient Crete and modern North America. He concludes that our North American culture has many characteristics of a culture of “pirates.” Using this thesis, he then demonstrates the relevance of Paul’s instructions to Titus for today: “If the Cretans can be delivered from piracy through Titus, there is hope for even North Americans” (49).

Those expecting an exegetical commentary of Titus will not find it in this book. Instead, as Hird walks with us through Titus, verse-by-verse, he provides basic explanations of the text. These explanations are liberally illustrated by the use of interesting and useful anecdotes, many drawn from his personal experiences.

Here are a couple of examples. Discussing the issue of drunkenness (1:7), Dr. Hird uses the life of Johnny Cash as an extended illustration of God’s power in battling addiction (37-40). Titus 1:10 becomes an opportunity to address the modern North American phenomena of yoga and labyrinth-praying as spiritually dark, deceptive, and dangerous practices (49-53).

The actual text is relatively short – fewer than 70 pages. A bibliography (3 pp.) and extensive endnotes (11 pp.) are provided.

Overall I found this book readable, enjoyable, and profitable.

My purpose

My goal through living theology is to equip and encourage you to become more like Jesus Christ and to live all of life with God-honoring competence and joy.

My content

To further that goal, I focus on providing you with practical resources for disciple-making and church health.

By ‘church health’ I do not mean ‘church’ as an institution. Rather I have in view communities of Christians – ‘Jesus communities’ – living out the values of the Kingdom of God in their ‘here and now’. The same goes for disciple-making – living and growing as followers of Jesus in all of life.

My biography

I became a follower of Jesus in my university years.

I had practised law for over 27 years when I accepted an invitation to pastor and teach within a Jesus community in Metro-Vancouver, Canada. More than 12 full and interesting years have passed. I’m an associate with Outreach Canada with a strong desire for the health of churches and the making of disciples – and I’m back practising law a couple of days a week. I’m also writing, speaking, and teaching in areas of practical theology with an emphasis on living theology.

Over the years I’ve completed an M.A. in Biblical Studies at Regent College (Vancouver), and a Doctor of Ministry. My doctoral thesis was at the intersection of leadership, conflict, and spiritual formation. I’ve taught in universities, colleges, churches, conferences, retreats, and seminars in North America, Europe, and Latin America.

One exciting project I’m working on is the re-discovery of Matthew as a practical and effective paradigm for making disciples. The research, field-testing, and development of this resource is still a work-in-progress.

Sharon and I have been married for 37+ years and have been blessed with four grown children, two sons-in-law, and two grandchildren – so far.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Captain Reed Fleming’s take on Restoring Health

“Rev. Dr. Ed Hird makes a compelling case that 21st Century North America is very similar to 1st Century Crete, an island of pirates. He uses Paul’s letter to Titus to unpack a prescription for health and recovery from a pirate-like life. He shares many personal stories along the way. A worthwhile read!”

Captain Reed Fleming

Street Hope Chaplain, Threshold Ministries

“I’m excited about being a part of the Kingdom of God. We launched Street Hope Saint John in the fall of 2012 and gather regularly at 36 Sewell Street in Uptown Saint John. The times together are centered on three themes:

1.) Study and worship – We believe there is no higher calling than to worship God. We believe that for Street Hope to be a catalyst in the community we must find ourselves in God’s presence and grow in our knowledge of Him. Street Hope gather as a community for worship, study and prayer at least once a day.

2.) Outreach & Maintenance Programs – The emphasis here is to provide venues where people can find freedom in Christ, from a variety of addictions and behaviours. Many of the founding members of the community come from lives ensnared in these addictions, so the program is of use in maintaining their freedom while reaching out to help others in the wider community to find such freedom. This involves 12 Step studies, an Overcomers program and a variety of video and guest speakers and ministries. This is the main way in which people become new members of the community.

3) Serving the Master – The community and its individuals serve the wider community. This is mainly done through volunteering with other existing ministries, particularly those that serve the marginalized of our city. Examples are: Out of the Cold, Out Flow, Hope Mission, Salvation Army Friendship Centre, and mission activities sponsored by local churches.

Thomas Law’s take on Restoring Health

http://tomlaw.org/blog/restoring-health

Restoring Health: Body, Mind and Spirit

By Ed A. Hird

Published by His Publishing Group, 2014.

ISBN 978-0-9782022-1-7

Tom Law: “Although the author comes from another faith tradition within the Christian church he has a lot to say to me and others. His insightful walk through the book of Titus makes the book come alive. As he adds modern day examples of what was going on in Titus’ time it makes the book come alive and helps us to understand how timeless the Bible really is.

As the author says, “What if the book of Titus contained the key to a more healthy life, even to healthy leadership? The book ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’ focuses on strengthening a new generation of healthy leaders. Drawing on examples from Titus’ healthy leadership in the pirate island of Crete, it shows how North Americans can embrace a holistically healthy life.”

About the Author:

Rev. Dr. Ed Hird served for 31 years as Rector of St. Simon’s North Vancouver from 1987 to 2018. Ordained in 1980, he also served at St. Philip’s Vancouver and St. Matthew’s Abbotsford. He and his wife Janice have three sons James, Mark, and Andrew. He served as Chaplain and President for Alpha Canada. As the National Chair for Anglican Renewal Ministries of Canada, he was one of three co-signers of the Montreal Declaration of Anglican Essentials.

For the past 30 years, he wrote over 500 articles as a columnist on spiritual issues for local North Vancouver newspapers. In the last number of years, he has had the opportunity to lead conferences and retreats in Honduras, Rwanda, Uganda, Washington State, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Newfoundland, and Toronto.

Book Reviewer: Tom Law is constantly seeking to climb the next mountain. One person has characterized him as “called to challenge the status quo.” Tom sees challenges as opportunities to drive forward. He desires to create an environment where attempting new things is the norm.

Tom practices a pro-active style of leadership. Tom understands that he needs to surround himself with those who exhibit strong trends in the areas where he is weak in order to have a balanced leadership. Therefore, even though he is a strong “Lion”, he enables and empowers others. Tom has a gregarious personality and his organizational style reflects this openness. Tom values networking.

Tom is a life-long learner. Over the course of the last few years Tom has read over 200 books and developed booksummaries.tomlaw.org. These books represent an eclectic range of subjects so as to keep and develop a wide ranging understanding of life, his ministry and those around him.

Discipleship is more caught than taught. As we relate to those around us they see that God has really made a difference in our lives and can do as much for them. This begins with the leadership of the church setting the example and creating expectancy in the congregation. Tom is convinced that if we can get this one piece right we will solve most of the church’s problems. More prayer, more giving, more going will result.

A letter of great encouragement and call to action

We need more bold prophetic calls to Godly leadership, Biblical leadership, strong leadership … Fr. Ed, in Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit, lays out a path to follow the writings of the Apostle Paul from his letter to one of his disciples, Titus. A letter of great encouragement and call to action. To follow Christ Jesus and His Holy Spirit’s leading to the calling in ministry; for without this focus, we will all fail.

You might not talk like a pirate much longer, matey

By  The Rev. Tim Fountain,

It is hard to presume to review a book in which the author is endorsed by noted Reformed theologian J.I. Packer.

Restoring Health approaches one of the “Pastoral Epistles” of the New Testament – manuals on church leadership – from a little mentioned feature of the historic setting to which it was written. The folks on the island of Crete, where Titus served as a Christian leader, were a culture shaped by Mediterranean pirates.

It takes a healthy leader to engage such a culture and transform it, rather than being overcome by its toxic elements. Hird draws out implications for church leaders today.

Hird is a good scholar and entering into this small book provides immediate fresh insights into familiar Bible verses.

Going to the Heart

By the Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

It is far too easy to look at outward appearances, and miss the heart of the matter.  The Hebrew prophet Samuel, before choosing King David, was told: “People look at the outward appearances but God looks at the heart.”  In North America, we can easily be three thousand miles wide and one inch deep.  We can easily be swallowed by the latest cultural fad, and never discover who we really are.  I love going to the gym, and keeping healthy.  But as mentioned in my recent book Restoring Health, it can’t just be about the outer appearances.  We need to look at health holistically in body, mind and spirit.

The Good Book says ‘Above all else, guard your heart for out of it are the issues of life.’  Our ‘heart’ refers to the core of our personality, our identity, whom we really are.   Many people have invested so much into keeping other people happy that they have very little idea whom they really are.  They confuse their core identity with their latest job, their education, their bank account or relationships, all of which may be very transitory.  The Good Shepherd said “Out of the heart, the mouth speaks”.   Sometimes in the disappointments of life, our heart can turn hard, like a stone.  Our hearts need melting, so that they can become soft again.  When our heart shuts down, we stop caring.  We slip into cynicism and bitterness.  God does not care about how good we look on the outside.  He goes to the heart of the matter.  God wants a genuine relationship with each of us.  It has been said that Jesus died on the cross from a broken heart.  He poured out his heart of love for each of us from Calvary’s tree.  Most Canadians believe in God, but we can easily keep God at a distance.  God is into intimacy.  God wants us to open our hearts to his love.   This love can never be forced.  It can only be offered.  When we open our hearts to the Father’s love, something happens at the core of our being.

When I was age 17 in the last few months of Grade 12, I had a life-changing encounter with the Father’s love.  Suddenly my heart, my core personality, was powerfully changed.  I was a new creation in Christ.  I had a new purpose and reason to live.  Within a week, I felt a call to be an Anglican priest.  My grandmother and mother had known for years that I would become a priest.   I was going to become an electrical engineer like my father.  God touched me at a heart level.  I had been going to church for many years, but nothing had connected.   Love changes everything.  When I finally understood that God loved me deeply, I was undone.  My whole world was turned undone.  God loves you just as much as he loves me.  God is waiting to touch each of us at the heart level.  The heart of the matter is our heart.  My prayer for those reading this article is that each of us will open our hearts to God’s amazing love for each of us.

The Rev. Dr. Ed Hird, BSW, MDiv, DMin

Quoting from the preface of Ed Hird’s newest book, RESTORING HEALTH,

“We have all been painfully stuck. Being at a key transition-point in our lives,

we do not know how to move forward, finding ourselves immobilized.”

However, as we all know The Lord works in incredible ways, thus my introduction to Ed. We met while attending a conference in

Meet Larry Luby of HIS Publishing Group - Voyage Dallas Magazine | Dallas City Guide

Houston, Texas where the two of us shared a common bond–the Anglican Mission. My Pastor, the right Reverend Philip Jones, was being inducted as the Apostolic Vicar for the AMiA and I had agreed to attend in a volunteer capacity. So a Canadian Pastor meets a Texan Publisher. No, I didn’t have my boots on and I left my horse at home, but during our conversation I learned he had written the very successful book, Battle for the Soul of Canada, and was planning a second book. To which I excitedly replied, “I have a publishing company.” The possibility of publishing Ed’s book for distribution in the United States seemed to fulfill a recent prayer request. I had recently felt the Lord’s urging that my main focus as a publisher should be to pastors, evangelists, speakers, and the like. I prayed, “Lord you are going to have to bring them to me, I don’t know how to canvass such a group.”

Upon Ed’s return to Canada we began corresponding over the internet through that wonderful medium called Skype. Don’t you know the internet can be a wonderful communication tool? After getting to know each other, praying together, and Ed gathering all of the facts the decision was made to move forward. The Lord had begun to answer my prayer leading me to publish Ed’s new book, RESTORING HEALTH – Body, Mind & Spirit – Strengthening a New Generation of Healthy Leaders. Since publishing Ed’s book I have begun to work with other pastors and speakers confirming that prayer is a powerful tool. Our Lord is good all the time.

I offer the following about HIS Publishing Company in the event any of Ed’s readers would like to discuss a book project or be in need of a trusted publishing partner.

Endorsement by Jane Harris-Zsovan of ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’

If you’re into self-centered, feel good, faddish Christianity, Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit will shake you out of your pew. Likening North American Christians to the untrustworthy, gluttonous pirates Titus met on the Island of Crete, Reverend Ed Hird challenges our ‘me first’ mantra, materialism and ‘feel good’ doctrines. If you want to remain physically flabby or morally ambivalent, this is not the book for you. But, if like the rapacious inhabitants of ancient Crete, you yearn to become a world changer, read on.

An endorsement by Dr. Murray Moerman of ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’

Ed’s loving concern is for emerging Christian leadership in a fallen, “pirate” world. His desire for post-modernity is that we rise from a passive default cynicism to a vigorous, full-orbed Christ-like health.

With Titus as model of directness, a telling inner voice challenges us from one foundational sector of health – “Why wait for a stroke or heart attack before we embrace a healthy lifestyle?” – with an urgency for the whole.

With remarkable skill bringing rich scholarship within our reach, Ed produces a rich and practical learning experience to those who authentically want to do personal transformation rather than talk about it.

Dr George Egerton’s endorsement of ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’

In “Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit”, the Reverend Dr. Ed Hird offers readers a richly engaging devotional commentary on St. Paul’s letter to Titus as the latter brought the Gospel of Christ to the island of Crete.

Ed and his wife Janice visited Crete in preparation for this study and walked in the footsteps of Titus, honored as the founding father of Christianity in Crete. His mission to convert the Cretans was no easy task, as their principal occupation was piracy, in which they reveled.

Each of Ed’s chapters, in following the text of Paul’s letter, skilfully interleaves well-informed exegesis with travelogue, history, personal and family autobiography, while also drawing on theological reflections from wise commentators — both ancient and modern, from Eusebius to Johnny Cash. Principal themes in Ed’s study include teaching on how this Epistle can build up the spiritual, mental and physical health of Christians and church leaders, the importance of sound doctrine, and the vital operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit — as necessary for today’s Christians as for the Apostolic church.

In short, this clearly-written and very readable book offers valuable teaching on how the Gospel of Christ transformed the ancient Cretans and can do the same in our lives today. It also would serve as a superb resource for home and group Bible studies.

Dr. George Egerton, Professor Emeritus, UBC History Department

Editor, Anglican Essentials
