Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit

Dr John B. MacDonald’s review of Restoring Health

Restoring Health: Body, Mind and Spirit by Ed A. Hird.

This book is part of the author’s focus on restoring health to the North American church by strengthening a new generation of healthy leaders. Paul’s letter to Titus is the biblical text for this project.

The book begins with a foreword by the respected theologian, J. I. Packer, and no fewer than eight pages of endorsements.

Paul had some harsh words to say about the people of Crete where Titus was serving: “one of themselves, a prophet of their own said, ‘Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.’ This testimony is true” (Titus 1:12-13a; pp. 29-30). Dr. Hird expands on this assessment by drawing from Crete’s ancient history as a habitation for pirates.

Hird then makes a comparison between the cultures of ancient Crete and modern North America. He concludes that our North American culture has many characteristics of a culture of “pirates.” Using this thesis, he then demonstrates the relevance of Paul’s instructions to Titus for today: “If the Cretans can be delivered from piracy through Titus, there is hope for even North Americans” (49).

Those expecting an exegetical commentary of Titus will not find it in this book. Instead, as Hird walks with us through Titus, verse-by-verse, he provides basic explanations of the text. These explanations are liberally illustrated by the use of interesting and useful anecdotes, many drawn from his personal experiences.

Here are a couple of examples. Discussing the issue of drunkenness (1:7), Dr. Hird uses the life of Johnny Cash as an extended illustration of God’s power in battling addiction (37-40). Titus 1:10 becomes an opportunity to address the modern North American phenomena of yoga and labyrinth-praying as spiritually dark, deceptive, and dangerous practices (49-53).

The actual text is relatively short – fewer than 70 pages. A bibliography (3 pp.) and extensive endnotes (11 pp.) are provided.

Overall I found this book readable, enjoyable, and profitable.

My purpose

My goal through living theology is to equip and encourage you to become more like Jesus Christ and to live all of life with God-honoring competence and joy.

My content

To further that goal, I focus on providing you with practical resources for disciple-making and church health.

By ‘church health’ I do not mean ‘church’ as an institution. Rather I have in view communities of Christians – ‘Jesus communities’ – living out the values of the Kingdom of God in their ‘here and now’. The same goes for disciple-making – living and growing as followers of Jesus in all of life.

My biography

I became a follower of Jesus in my university years.

I had practised law for over 27 years when I accepted an invitation to pastor and teach within a Jesus community in Metro-Vancouver, Canada. More than 12 full and interesting years have passed. I’m an associate with Outreach Canada with a strong desire for the health of churches and the making of disciples – and I’m back practising law a couple of days a week. I’m also writing, speaking, and teaching in areas of practical theology with an emphasis on living theology.

Over the years I’ve completed an M.A. in Biblical Studies at Regent College (Vancouver), and a Doctor of Ministry. My doctoral thesis was at the intersection of leadership, conflict, and spiritual formation. I’ve taught in universities, colleges, churches, conferences, retreats, and seminars in North America, Europe, and Latin America.

One exciting project I’m working on is the re-discovery of Matthew as a practical and effective paradigm for making disciples. The research, field-testing, and development of this resource is still a work-in-progress.

Sharon and I have been married for 37+ years and have been blessed with four grown children, two sons-in-law, and two grandchildren – so far.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

A letter of great encouragement and call to action

We need more bold prophetic calls to Godly leadership, Biblical leadership, strong leadership … Fr. Ed, in Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit, lays out a path to follow the writings of the Apostle Paul from his letter to one of his disciples, Titus. A letter of great encouragement and call to action. To follow Christ Jesus and His Holy Spirit’s leading to the calling in ministry; for without this focus, we will all fail.

Lois De Jean: Restoring Health has a timely message

The Reverend Ed Hird’s sequel book Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit has a timely message for North Americans. There is much similarity between the destructive lifestyle of first century pirate Cretans and twenty-first century materialistic and individualistic members in society. Based on St. Paul’s letter to Titus, Rev’d Hird carefully explains how Titus is to bring the Cretans to serve Christ and to turn from their unproductive and self-centered lives. The book is theologically sound and well researched. It is also accessible to readers. I look forward to reading his next book.

Kimberley Payne, former Personal Trainer, endorses ‘Restoring Health’

As a former personal trainer and health enthusiast, I believe that prayer and Bible study are to the spirit what exercise and healthy eating are to the body. Rev. Ed Hird shows how we can embrace this holistically healthy life through the verse-by-verse commentary of the book of Titus. He opens up Paul’s letter and takes us on an interesting journey of discovery combined with history lessons. I recommend this book as an instruction manual for the next generation of healthy leaders.

Foreword by Dr. JI Packer to ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’

Foreword

By the Rev. Dr. J.I. Packer

Think of Shakespeare.  Each of his plays is distinctive, having its own character and plot.  Some of them are grander than others.  But they all have the tang, so to speak, of Shakespeare, and it is hard to imagine any of them being written by anyone else.

So with Paul’s letters.  Each is different, and they are not all equally weighty.  But in each, we meet the same person: the apostle who lives under the authority of his risen Lord and Saviour, and of the divine message of which he has been made trustee; the teacher who calls constantly for faith in the truth of that message and in its Christ, God-man, sin-bearer, conqueror of death, discipler and coming judge; the pastor who insists that faith must show itself and unshakeable hope and conscientious, law-keeping love.  In all Paul’s letters, the flavour of his gospel is steady, sweet and strong, and that is as true of Titus as it is of any.

Titus is sometimes dismissed as a dull, possibly non-Pauline rehash of things that Paul says more vividly elsewhere, notably in his letters to his prize protégé Timothy.  But such a verdict is unperceptive, not to say perverse.  Titus was Paul’s second deputy after Timothy, and Paul had left him on the island of Crete to finish setting in order the congregations of first-generation converts there.  Was this a tough task?  Yes.  Cretan culture, so it appears, was casual, morally sloppy, undisciplined, self-indulgent, and self-absorbed.  It is true that in his letter to Titus, Paul spells out Christian essentials in a somewhat laborious way, but this does not mean that he doubts the adequacy of Titus’ grasp of the Christian basics; what it shows, rather, is that he is going over in his own mind the full and forthright terms in which the fundamentals needed to be impressed on the Christian believers.  Equally forthright statements, be it said, to young churches and church plants are sometimes needed today.

Ed Hird is a working pastor, a gospel veteran whose bailiwick for many years has arguably had something of Crete in it.  He recognizes the realism of this letter, and his exposition brings it out.  I heartily commend what he has written.

Bishop Dr. Silas Ng’s endorsement of ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’

In this highly toxic world, we desperately need a 360 degrees restoration of our whole being, marriage, family, church, society and beyond.  Dr. Hird gives us a Biblical and practical way to learn how Paul raised Titus so that we can let that restoration happen to us.  A new generation of healthy leaders will be raised up because of our faithfulness and willingness.

In Restoring Health: Body, Mind and Spirit, the Reverend Dr. Ed Hird takes us on an epic journey through the biblical book of Titus, Paul’s instruction manual for the pirates on the island of Crete.  Ed Hird develops the idea that we are all pirates, in need of salvation and holistic health in body, mind and spirit – in need of health in every area of our lives.  He reminds us that Healthiness = Godliness = Christlikeness.

In the church today, there is a desperate need for holistically healthy leaders – just as Titus the Greek Christian was to the Cretan pirates.  The question remains – will we be available and accountable to God in choosing the way of health, of life and of godliness?  I highly recommend this book to all who desire to choose the healthy way of Christlikeness.

Dave Carson’s Endorsement of Restoring Health: Body, Mind and Spirit

“This commentary on Titus is not just a devotional. It is a rallying cry for the Kingdom of God!  It brings Titus out of relative obscurity into the front ranks of the 1st Century Apostles. We see Titus confronting the powers of darkness in ancient Crete with the Gospel and bringing transformation. A much needed message for anyone who loves their city and nation and feels in a rut.”

As Sick as our Secrets

By the Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

There’s an oft-heard saying in the recovery community: “We’re as sick as our secrets.”  Over the years, I have met many people in abusive situations who have paid a great price to eventually extricate themselves from the vicious cycle of manipulation and recrimination. Sexual and physical abuse, in particular, scars the victim deeply.  Often the victims falsely blame themselves. Recovery from abuse involves breaking the conspiracy of silence and deception perpetrated by abusers. Only the truth, however painful, can really set us free. Secrecy keeps us chained to our abusers.

At the heart of the ‘twelve steps’, in Step Four and Five, is the willingness to break the power of secrecy by admitting to God, yourself, and another person the exact nature of how you have wronged other people.  I have done many ‘Fifth Steps’ for others over the past twenty-eight years.  It is always such a privilege.  I feel like I grow so much through this opportunity.  I notice, however, that ‘Fifth Steps’ are very difficult in our secretive, victim-based culture.  Many people want to come to me and admit the exact nature of how they have been wronged, but not how they have wronged other people.  Until we can open up and get such things off our chest, we are still stuck with guilt, recrimination, and self-doubt.  We really are as sick as our secrets.

The Good Book tells us to cast our cares upon the Lord, for He cares for us.  I have found that sharing deeply my heart with another caring, listening person can be profoundly liberating.  That is why we are encouraged by James, Jesus’ brother, to ‘confess our sins to each other and pray for each other that we may be healed.’  I have a number of friends who have had the courage to go see Bonnie Chatwin, a North Shore Pastoral & Clinical Counselor.  It was not at all easy for them to do this, but I was amazed by the breakthroughs that they have achieved.  How much do we want to be well?  Often the price of being well is giving up our obsessive need for independence and secrecy, and beginning to trust another person with our life story.

We as Canadians live in a culture that has become more secretive and private.  The vast majority of Canadians still believe in God, prayer, and Jesus’ resurrection, but such faith concerns have largely gone into the closet.  There is a widespread perception that faith is so personal and private that it cannot be mentioned publicly.

The  fast-rising and falling Da Vinci Code fad fit totally into that way of thinking.  It implicitly taught that true spirituality is about dark hidden secrets that only the elite may know about: secrets allegedly hidden in Da Vinci’s paintings, secrets covered by an alleged secret society named the Priory of Sion, secrets about Mary Magdalene and Mother Eve in the Garden of Eden.  Over one hundred million North Americans have either read the Da Vinci Code book or seen the movie.  There is something in us that is drawn to secret knowledge and secret passageways.  But is secrecy really the way to health and life?  Is secrecy really the key to genuine spirituality?

The most famous person in the world once said: “I have spoken openly to the world…I said nothing in secret.” (John 18:20)  Jesus also said that “whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed or secret is meant to be brought out into the open.” (Matthew 4:22)  Rabbi Saul/Paul, who was Jesus’ most famous disciple, commented: “we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.  On the contrary, we set forth the truth plainly…” (2 Corinthians 4:2)

Contrary to the claims of the Da Vinci Code, Christianity has no secret codes, no secret initiation rites, no secret vows.  Jesus said nothing in secret.  Jesus brought everything out in the open.  We really are as sick as our secrets.

“More Than Gold” Olympic Passion

By the Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

Vancouverites put tremendous energy into the Winter Olympics.   The lengthy preparations were indeed a marathon.

The world’s most famous Olympic race is the marathon.  The original Battle of the Marathon in 490 B.C was just twenty-two miles from embattled Athens.  A Greek soldier ran all the way, day and night, to Athens to give his dying words: “Rejoice. We have conquered”.

In 1896, the modern-day Olympics were revived in Greece, spreading throughout the globe.  Each one of us in our own way is running an Olympic marathon every day of our life. The Bible tells us: “Run with patience the race set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)  Dr. William Barclay commented: “It is easy to begin the race of life but hard to finish. The one thing necessary for life is staying-power, and that is what so many people lack.  It was suggested to a certain very famous man that his biography should be written while he was still alive.  He absolutely refused to give permission, and his reason was: ‘I have seen so many men fall out at the last lap.’  It is easy to wreck a noble life or a fine record by some closing foolishness.”

There were many gold medals won  by Canadian athletes.  Winning is exciting.  Many athletes realized that the Olympics are about more than gold, more than just winning.  Olympics co-founder Pierre de Coubertin, inspired by a sermon at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, wrote the following ‘creed’ for the Olympics: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”  The Christian community in Greater Vancouver came together for the Olympics across denominational and ethnic barriers to affirm that life is about more than gold.   The wider Christian community played its part in truly welcoming the world to Vancouver.  Many athletes shared their experiences of what it is like to win medals, and what is worth more than gold to them. You can watch them online.

Probably one of the most famous ‘Olympic runners’ is the apostle Paul, a former Rabbi who was knocked off his horse while racing to Damascus, Syria. He often used Olympic Marathon language to communicate his heart: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown of laurel that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.  Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly…” (1 Corinthians 9:24-26).

Paul’s dying words were profoundly Olympic: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” As Bishop Michael Baughen depicts it,

“The relay runner is pounding round the track, using every ounce of energy, heading for the hand-over point.  Ahead of him is the next runner in the relay, feet beginning to move in anticipation, eyes on the runner coming towards him,  his hand now outstretched to take the baton at the appropriate moment and then to run and run, while the man he took the baton from collapses breathless on to the grass.  Paul is pounding towards the end.”

The Vancouver Olympics came in like a storm and then was gone.  The Gold medals were soon a distant memory. The lasting question is how your daily marathon is doing? Are you stretching each day towards the finish line?  Are you running the race of life in such a way as to get the prize? Life is truly about more than gold.

My prayer for the various Olympics around the world  is that the love of God will pour through us in the gift of hospitality so that the world will come to know the prize that lasts forever.
