Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit

Going to the Heart

By the Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

It is far too easy to look at outward appearances, and miss the heart of the matter.  The Hebrew prophet Samuel, before choosing King David, was told: “People look at the outward appearances but God looks at the heart.”  In North America, we can easily be three thousand miles wide and one inch deep.  We can easily be swallowed by the latest cultural fad, and never discover who we really are.  I love going to the gym, and keeping healthy.  But as mentioned in my recent book Restoring Health, it can’t just be about the outer appearances.  We need to look at health holistically in body, mind and spirit.

The Good Book says ‘Above all else, guard your heart for out of it are the issues of life.’  Our ‘heart’ refers to the core of our personality, our identity, whom we really are.   Many people have invested so much into keeping other people happy that they have very little idea whom they really are.  They confuse their core identity with their latest job, their education, their bank account or relationships, all of which may be very transitory.  The Good Shepherd said “Out of the heart, the mouth speaks”.   Sometimes in the disappointments of life, our heart can turn hard, like a stone.  Our hearts need melting, so that they can become soft again.  When our heart shuts down, we stop caring.  We slip into cynicism and bitterness.  God does not care about how good we look on the outside.  He goes to the heart of the matter.  God wants a genuine relationship with each of us.  It has been said that Jesus died on the cross from a broken heart.  He poured out his heart of love for each of us from Calvary’s tree.  Most Canadians believe in God, but we can easily keep God at a distance.  God is into intimacy.  God wants us to open our hearts to his love.   This love can never be forced.  It can only be offered.  When we open our hearts to the Father’s love, something happens at the core of our being.

When I was age 17 in the last few months of Grade 12, I had a life-changing encounter with the Father’s love.  Suddenly my heart, my core personality, was powerfully changed.  I was a new creation in Christ.  I had a new purpose and reason to live.  Within a week, I felt a call to be an Anglican priest.  My grandmother and mother had known for years that I would become a priest.   I was going to become an electrical engineer like my father.  God touched me at a heart level.  I had been going to church for many years, but nothing had connected.   Love changes everything.  When I finally understood that God loved me deeply, I was undone.  My whole world was turned undone.  God loves you just as much as he loves me.  God is waiting to touch each of us at the heart level.  The heart of the matter is our heart.  My prayer for those reading this article is that each of us will open our hearts to God’s amazing love for each of us.

The Rev. Dr. Ed Hird, BSW, MDiv, DMin

A word from Larry Luby my publisher

Quoting from the preface of Ed Hird’s newest book, RESTORING HEALTH,

“We have all been painfully stuck. Being at a key transition-point in our lives,

we do not know how to move forward, finding ourselves immobilized.”

However, as we all know The Lord works in incredible ways, thus my introduction to Ed. We met while attending a conference in

Meet Larry Luby of HIS Publishing Group - Voyage Dallas Magazine | Dallas City Guide

Houston, Texas where the two of us shared a common bond–the Anglican Mission. My Pastor, the right Reverend Philip Jones, was being inducted as the Apostolic Vicar for the AMiA and I had agreed to attend in a volunteer capacity. So a Canadian Pastor meets a Texan Publisher. No, I didn’t have my boots on and I left my horse at home, but during our conversation I learned he had written the very successful book, Battle for the Soul of Canada, and was planning a second book. To which I excitedly replied, “I have a publishing company.” The possibility of publishing Ed’s book for distribution in the United States seemed to fulfill a recent prayer request. I had recently felt the Lord’s urging that my main focus as a publisher should be to pastors, evangelists, speakers, and the like. I prayed, “Lord you are going to have to bring them to me, I don’t know how to canvass such a group.”

Upon Ed’s return to Canada we began corresponding over the internet through that wonderful medium called Skype. Don’t you know the internet can be a wonderful communication tool? After getting to know each other, praying together, and Ed gathering all of the facts the decision was made to move forward. The Lord had begun to answer my prayer leading me to publish Ed’s new book, RESTORING HEALTH – Body, Mind & Spirit – Strengthening a New Generation of Healthy Leaders. Since publishing Ed’s book I have begun to work with other pastors and speakers confirming that prayer is a powerful tool. Our Lord is good all the time.

I offer the following about HIS Publishing Company in the event any of Ed’s readers would like to discuss a book project or be in need of a trusted publishing partner.

HIS Publishing Group is an Independent Publishing House. We bridge the gap between self-publishing and traditional publishing. Our main goal is to advance the Kingdom of God and we do so by partnering with our clients to fulfill their dream from book concept through design and publication. Endorsement by Jane Harris-Zsovan of ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’

If you’re into self-centered, feel good, faddish Christianity, Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit will shake you out of your pew. Likening North American Christians to the untrustworthy, gluttonous pirates Titus met on the Island of Crete, Reverend Ed Hird challenges our ‘me first’ mantra, materialism and ‘feel good’ doctrines. If you want to remain physically flabby or morally ambivalent, this is not the book for you. But, if like the rapacious inhabitants of ancient Crete, you yearn to become a world changer, read on.

An endorsement by Dr. Murray Moerman of ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’

Ed’s loving concern is for emerging Christian leadership in a fallen, “pirate” world. His desire for post-modernity is that we rise from a passive default cynicism to a vigorous, full-orbed Christ-like health.

With Titus as model of directness, a telling inner voice challenges us from one foundational sector of health – “Why wait for a stroke or heart attack before we embrace a healthy lifestyle?” – with an urgency for the whole.

With remarkable skill bringing rich scholarship within our reach, Ed produces a rich and practical learning experience to those who authentically want to do personal transformation rather than talk about it.

Dr George Egerton’s endorsement of ‘Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit’

In “Restoring Health: body, mind and spirit”, the Reverend Dr. Ed Hird offers readers a richly engaging devotional commentary on St. Paul’s letter to Titus as the latter brought the Gospel of Christ to the island of Crete.

Ed and his wife Janice visited Crete in preparation for this study and walked in the footsteps of Titus, honored as the founding father of Christianity in Crete. His mission to convert the Cretans was no easy task, as their principal occupation was piracy, in which they reveled.

Each of Ed’s chapters, in following the text of Paul’s letter, skilfully interleaves well-informed exegesis with travelogue, history, personal and family autobiography, while also drawing on theological reflections from wise commentators — both ancient and modern, from Eusebius to Johnny Cash. Principal themes in Ed’s study include teaching on how this Epistle can build up the spiritual, mental and physical health of Christians and church leaders, the importance of sound doctrine, and the vital operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit — as necessary for today’s Christians as for the Apostolic church.

In short, this clearly-written and very readable book offers valuable teaching on how the Gospel of Christ transformed the ancient Cretans and can do the same in our lives today. It also would serve as a superb resource for home and group Bible studies.

Dr. George Egerton, Professor Emeritus, UBC History Department

Editor, Anglican Essentials

Christmas is about giving

By the Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

What is it about Christmas time that brings out the best in us? 33% of all charitable giving by Canadians is given during the December Christmas season.  One of my favorite Christmas movies is ‘It’s a wonderful life’ where Jimmy Stewart plays the part of a generous but discouraged businessman who discovered that he really was making a positive impact.

Written by Frank Capra in 1946, the movie was initially seen as a box-office flop.  It did not win one Academy Award Oscar, but later went on to become one of the one hundred most popular movies of all times.  It is now seen as the number one inspirational North American movie ever made. You will remember how the Christmas angel Clarence had to earn his wings by helping out Jimmy Stewart (aka George Bailey). George was so discouraged at Christmas that he was about to jump off a bridge.  Clarence the delightful angel showed George what an amazing impact his generosity was making, and how much poorer his town would be without him.

Generosity is never wasted. Love is never wasted.  Goodness is never wasted.  Sometimes it feels like we are not making a difference, but Christmas reminds us that love wins over despair, love wins over darkness, love wins over emptiness.  At the heart of Christmas is a tiny baby, the Christ child, born in a manger. God so loved the world that he gave his only son.  Christmas is about giving.  God gave. We give.  Everyone wins when we are generous at Christmas and year-round.

BC Christian Ashram involvement since 1975

The first Christian Ashram that I attended in 1975

Gordon Hunter, Percy , and Mary Webster were very memorable speakers. I attended on the personal invitation of my fiancee who had attended the first Christian Ashram in 1974. The deep impact that the Ashram had on her life made me curious to attend and experience a Christian Ashram for myself.

Head-over-heels in love…

DSC_0621By the Rev. Dr. Ed Hird

In the spring of 1975, I fell head-over-heels in love with my future wife.   Janice and I used to take the bus home together from UBC.  I noticed that something was different. Her eyes sparkled.  It turns out that she had been powerfully touched by the Holy Spirit at the previous BC Christian Ashram retreat.

That year on the bus, we discussed the person and work of the Holy Spirit.  She would often let me ‘win’ the conversation.  Seeing her as just a good friend, I had no idea that Janice was pursuing me. When Janice invited me to attend the Summer BC Christian Ashram retreat, I naturally said yes.  Being young and impetuous, the discipline of the Christian Ashram of maintaining silence from 11pm to 8am was difficult.

Over the years, I have read all 28 books of the Christian Ashram founder Dr. E. Stanley Jones.  Initially I wondered why Dr. Jones seemed to take a while to get to the point. Later I realized that like Nicky Gumbel of the Alpha Course, his focus is helping the unchurched to find Jesus at their own pace.  Because Dr. Jones spent over fifty years as a missionary in India, he learned how to be gentle and respectful to other religions without compromising on the essentials of the Gospel.

BC Christian Ashram pictureJones’ first book was called ‘Christ of the Indian Road’. In 1930 he organized the first Christian Ashram with just three people in attendance. Since then, the Christian Ashram has spread all around the world, especially in North America.  The largest Christian Ashram in the world is held in Berwick, Nova Scotia, which has had over 800 participants.  The theme of every Christian Ashram is ‘Jesus is Lord!’

In Canada, we have five Christian Ashrams from coast to coast, including BC, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.  There are many renewed Anglicans that take part on an interdenominational basis.  My wife and I DSC_0623have had the privilege of either speaking at or attending four different Canadian Christian Ashrams. While all Christian Ashrams are unique, they share a common framework of   Christian community and the disciplines of the Holy Spirit.

Our original speaker, The Rev David Rich, an Anglican priest from Mississippi, was forced to cancel unexpectedly, in light of an unavoidable need for a hip replacement. We were so blessed that our good friend Pastor David Carson stepped in at the last minute as our keynote speaker for the 36th Annual BC Christian Ashram retreat.  David Carson’s theme was “Jesus the High Priest: The New and Living Way” from the Book of Hebrews. David is a very dynamic

Rev Rod Ellis & Pastor David Carson

and insightful speaker who left us with many fresh insights into God’s Word.  The joy and power of the Holy Spirit was bubbling from David the whole weekend. I have never met anyone so contagiously excited about Melchizedek, and how it relates to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  The Rev Rod Ellis of the Church of our Lord, Victoria, our Bible teacher, taught on Nehemiah. He made Nehemiah come alive, showing us how we all need to play our part in ‘rebuilding the walls’.

Throughout the entire four days, there is a 24-hour Prayer Vigil that everyone is invited to take part in for an hour at a time.  This non-stop prayer focus seems to really soften DSCF3266our hearts to God’s Holy Spirit.  The two ‘pillars’ of the Christian Ashram are the initial ‘Open Heart’ session where people are invited to share three things: “Why have I come? What do I want? What do I need?”  At the end of the Ashram, we have the ‘Overflowing Heart’ session where people are invited to share what Jesus has done for them during the retreat. In their testimonies, the adults, youth and children were overflowing with love and gratitude to Christ. Many had experienced significant physical and/or emotional healings through the work of the Holy Spirit.  I have never been to a Christian Ashram where people were not powerfully healed in body, mind and spirit.

DSCF1675I was recently appointed as part of the Group of 4 which gives spiritual mentorship to the United Christian Ashram movement throughout the world.  As Director of the BC Christian Ashram retreat, I am so grateful for God’s sovereign hand from coast to coast, renewing and refreshing his people. You are encouraged to click on our BC Christian Ashram website.

Dr AW Tozer: God’s Heart Surgeon

By Rev. Dr. Ed Hirdtozer

One of my favorite authors is Dr. A.W. Tozer.  I appreciate him because he stirs me to think, to feel, to hope, and to search.  In this information age of ever-increasing data, Tozer gave us more than just more knowledge; he gave us wisdom to live by.  He believed that the widest thing in the universe is not space: it is the potential of the human heart.

Tozer saw it as one of the world’s worst tragedies  that we allow our hearts to shrink until there is room in them for little besides ourselves.  There are times in my life when my heart has shrunk and hardened.  Dr Tozer has been like a ‘heart surgeon’ to me,  performing spiritual angioplasty when I have needed it the most.  He has helped me keep my heart open and soft towards my family, my community, and my God.

Tozer’s final years of life were spent in Toronto. On May 12, 1963, he died of a heart attack at age 66.  Some wonder why Tozer’s writings are as fresh today as when he was alive.  It is because, as one friend commented, “He left the superficial, the obvious and the trivial for others to toss around. . . . His books reach deep into the heart.”

Tozer’s love for words also pervaded his tozer1family life. He quizzed his children on what they read and made up bedtime stories for them. “The thing I remember most about my father,” reflects his daughter Rebecca, “was those marvelous stories he would tell.”

His humor, written and spoken, has been compared to that of Will Rogers–honest and homespun. People could one moment be swept by gales of laughter and the next sit in a holy hush.  Tozer believed that the essence of true religion is spontaneity.

Tozer held that one way society destroys people is by preventing them from thinking their own thoughts.  As Canadians with our emphasis on accepting all views, we are particularly susceptible to being programmed by our media.  Our ‘vastly improved methods of communication’ of which the shortsighted boast so loudly now enable a few people in strategic centers to feed into millions of minds alien thought-stuff, ready-made and pre-digested.  A little effortless assimilation of these borrowed ideas and the average person has done all the thinking he will or can do.  Tozer believed that the mind should be an eye to see with rather than a bin to store facts in.  Every time I read Tozer,  I feel like the fog has lifted from the tops of the forests, and I can see clearly again.

In Greater Vancouver, there are many very Tozer pursuit-of-godsuccessful people.  Sometimes the most successful outwardly are the most wounded inwardly, especially in one’s primary relationships.  “Not the educators nor the legislators nor the scientists can give us tranquillity of heart, and without tranquillity, whatever else they give us is useless at best.”  Tozer commented that in this world people are rated by what they do.  They are rated according to the distance they have come up the hill of achievement.

Tozer believed that excessive preoccupation with the struggle to win narrows the mind, hardens the heart, and blots out a thousand bright visions that might be enjoyed if there were only leisure to notice them.  No one, said Tozer, is worthy to succeed unless he is willing to fail.  Jesus died an apparent failure, discredited by the leaders of established religion, rejected by society, and forsaken by his friends.  We can afford to follow Jesus to failure.  Faith, says Tozer, dares to fail.  Jesus’ resurrection is the ultimate reason why failure and crosses need not intimidate us.

One hundred and twelve years after his birth, Dr. A.W. Tozer still serves as a symbol of resurrected hope and wisdom in our fragmented age.

Dr Chuck Swindoll: Rejoice in the Lord Always

By Rev Dr Ed HirdDr Chuck Swindoll Picture

I enjoyed reading ‘Laugh Again’ by the best-selling author and radio communicator, Dr. Chuck Swindoll.  He tells the story of a cute Peanuts cartoon where Lucy says to Snoopy: ‘There are times when you really bug me, but I must admit there are also times when I feel like giving you a big hug.’  Snoopy replies: ‘That’s the way I am…huggable and buggable.’

Chuck’s book gives practical tips on how to take ourselves less seriously, and how to fall more in love with life.  Too many adults, says Chuck, have become so serious and overly responsible that they have lost one of God’s best gifts: a sense of humour.

Dr Chuck Swindoll's book Laugh AgainDr. Swindoll met a man who told Chuck of his need to work hard at being happier.  He said that he had been reared in an ultraserious home.  “We didn’t talk about our feelings…we worked…Funny thing…in my sixty-plus years I have achieved about everything I dreamed of doing and I have been awarded for it.  My problem is that I don’t know how to have fun and enjoy these things hard work has brought me.  I cannot remember the last time I laughed–I mean really laughed.”

As he turned to walk away, he dropped this ‘bomb’: “I suppose I now need to work harder at being happier.”  Chuck reached over, took him by the arm, and said: “Trust me on this one- a happy heart is not achieved by hard work and long hours.  If it were, the happiest people on earth would be the workaholics…and I have never met a workaholic whose sense of humour balanced out his intensity.”

Dr. Swindoll goes on to talk about the up-side Dr Chuck Swindoll1and downside of our drive to achieve.  Jokingly speaking of an ‘elite club’ High Achievers Anonymous,  Chuck spoke compassionately about the high cost that our work addictions play in our primary relationships.  The tragedy is, enough is never enough.  Life becomes reduced to work, tasks, effort, an endless list of shoulds and musts…minus the necessary fun and laughter that keeps everything in perspective.  Chuck says that there is always one telltale sign when pride takes charge of our life: the fun leaves.

Deep within, the overachiever begans to think that life is much too busy, much too serious to waste it on silly things like relaxation and laughter.  Why has our 20th century suffered so terribly from laughless dictators like Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini?  G.K. Chesterton comments: ‘Madmen are always serious; they go mad from lack of humour.’

GK ChestertonG.K. Chesterton also commented: “I’m all in favour of laughing. Laughter has something in common in it with the ancient winds of faith and inspiration; it unfreezes pride and unwinds secrecy; it makes men forget themselves in the presence of something greater than themselves; something that they cannot resist.”

Dr. Swindoll had a deep fear that if he became ordained, he would have to become ultra-serious and sour-faced.  One day God said to him: “You can faithfully serve Me, but you can still be yourself.  Being my servant doesn’t require you to stop laughing.”

Laughter is hope’s last weapon.  As Dr.Swindoll puts it, only those who are firm in their faith can laugh in the face of tragedy.  A young woman had booked herself into a motel in order to do herself in.  She had endured numerous failed relationships with men and had had several abortions.  She was empty, angry, and could see no reason to go on.  Finally, just before dawn, she reached into her purse and pulled out a loaded pistol.  Trembling, she stuck it into her mouth and closed her eyes.  Suddenly the clock alarm snapped on with the message of new hope from Dr. Swindoll.  Before the thirty-minute broadcast was over, she gave her life to Jesus Christ.  When she phoned Dr. Swindoll’s office to share what had happened, she said that she could still taste the cold steel from the gun barrel she had pulled from her mouth.

My prayer for those reading this article is that each of us may discover an unshakable reason to keep on living and an unshakable love of our Creator.
